ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN: "When the Spirit Comes in Power" is a contribution to the ongoing debate about what kind of reform the Church needs today. Peter Herbeck contends that the Church needs to experience again the “charismatic dimension” of the Christian life. In the words of Pope John Paul II, the charismatic dimension is the “present, vital action of the power of the Holy Spirit in the life of each member of the Church.”

In his recently published book, "When the Spirit Comes in Power," Peter uses dynamic examples, beginning with his own testimony, and includes stories from his mission work throughout the world to illustrate the power of God’s Spirit to radically change lives and bring people into personal relationship with Christ and service of God’s kingdom. He also uses teaching from the Scriptures and the writings of the Church to help the reader understand the vital role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Catholic Church. He writes:

"The Church is confronted with a tremendous challenge. She must not only defend her doctrine and deeds against error, but she must provide a place of encounter once again. She must open the door to authentic religious experience, to a living knowledge of God, one rooted in the demonstration of the Spirit and power."

Here is what other respected Catholics are saying about Peter’s new book:

“You will be hooked by this powerful yet breezy mix of personal experiences and sound teaching that shows what a Church renewed in the Holy Spirit could look like, and where, in fact, it’s already happening.” Fr. George Montague, Professor of Theology, St. Mary’s University

“An old adage says that what is most personal is most universal. Peter Herbeck’s book is personal and very moving. It also develops powerfully the universal application of his experiences. It is a compelling call to the Church at every level to embrace the power and charisms of the Holy Spirit.”

Fr. Michael Scanlan, TOR, Chancellor, Franciscan University of Steubenville
