Dominican University's Siena Center presents lecture on medieval literature

RIVER FOREST, IL (January 22, 2010) - Dominican University's Siena Center will present a lecture titled "Prudential Penitence" with Robert Hanning, professor emeritus of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, on Thursday, February 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Parmer Hall Room 108, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. This lecture is part of the Illinois Medieval Association & Medieval Association of the Midwest conference.

Hanning will discuss the development of aural confessions during the medieval ages. This new adaptation of the sacrament required both the penitents to be more discreet in what they would confess and the priests to be more deliberate in how they would respond. Hanning will then examine how this more careful confession process, or "prudential penitence," was used by authors such as Geoffrey Chaucer and Giovanni Boccaccio as a component of some of their most trenchant and amusing fictions about both clergy and laity.

Hanning has been a faculty member at Columbia University since 1963. His research has focused on Old and Middle English literature, Chaucer, medieval romance, Boccaccio, Castiglione and Ariosto. His forthcoming book, Serious Play: Crises of Desire and Authority in the Poetry of Ovid, Chaucer, and Ariosto, is to be published by Columbia University Press.
