Inaugural Msgr. Anthony Brouwers Award to be presented February 6, 2010
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 4, 2009) - Mission Doctors Association will recognize the work of Dr. Richard and Mrs. Loretta Stoughton with the first annual Monsignor Anthony Brouwers Award to be presented by Mother Antonia Brenner on February 6, 2010 at the Mission Doctors Auxiliary Benefit Gala at the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles.
The Stoughtons recently completed eight years of service at St. Theresa’s Hospital in Zimbabwe. Initially serving from 1970-1975 along with their seven children, Dr. Stoughton retired from his medical practice in Shawano, WI in 2000. Since that time, Dr. Stoughton and other mission doctors serving both long and short term have been instrumental in bringing much needed care to the people served by this rural Catholic hospital. Their work includes the program of education and treatment that has dramatically reduced the transmission of HIV from mother to child. Introduction of antiretroviral drugs has improved and extended the lives of many patients once on the brink of death. With the Stoughtons ongoing commitment, St. Theresa continues to be an oasis of hope
Elise Frederick, Executive Director of Mission Doctors Association wrote of the Stoughtons being chosen as honorees, “The vision of Msgr. Brouwers to connect lay Catholics with needs around the world is exemplified in the selfless and faithful service of Dick and Loretta Stoughton. Their service is more than the obvious meeting of humanitarian need, they came to live their faith; from the daybreak walk to daily mass on the dirt road, to reaching out to other faith communities to ensure the compassionate treatment of all those suffering with HIV/AIDS. The Stoughtons reflect the best we can offer a world in need, skills, compassion, and faith.”
Presenting this special award will be Mother Antonia Brenner, whose biography is detailed in the book The Prison Angel: Mother Antonia’s Journey From Beverly Hills to a Life of Service in a Mexican Jail Mother Antonia was deeply influenced and inspired by Msgr. Anthony Brouwers who served as her spiritual director. Foundress of the Sisters of the Eleventh Hour of St. John Eudes, Mother Antonia’s journey and service is also a credit to Msgr. Brouwers love of Christ recognized in those most in need.
