Canonization Ceremony of Blessed Damien of Molokai to Air on CatholicTV

WATERTOWN, MA (October 2, 2009) - On Sunday, October 11th, CatholicTV will air the Canonization ceremony of Blessed Damien of Molokai in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Pope Benedict XVI will declare Damien a saint at the Mass. Blessed Damien is best known for his work with lepers in Hawaii at Kalaupapa. He eventually died in 1889 after contracting the disease himself. Blessed Damien will be canonized along with 4 other blesseds. These are: Bl. Rafael Arnáiz Barón a member of the Cistercian's of the Strict Observance and is considered one of the greatest mystics of the 20th century; Zygmunt Szczesny Felinski, Polish former archbishop of Warsaw and founder of the Congregation of Franciscan Sisters of the Family of Mary; Francesc Coll y Guitart, Spanish professed priest of the Order of Friars Preachers and Jeanne Jugan, French virgin and foundress of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Bishop Larry Silva of Hawaii will lead a group from his diocese to attend the canonization in Rome. The group includes 11 residents of the leprosy settlement at Kalaupapa where Blessed Damien served as well as a 70-member choir.

In October, CatholicTV will air a documentary on Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos. Blessed Francis was a Redemporist priest who was known for working with the poor and destitute during the Civil War. He eventually died of yellow fever while ministering in New Orleans. A shrine for Blessed Francis is located in New Orleans and is open to the public.
