Consistent Life Hails Papal-Presidential Encounter

SILVER SPRINGS, MD (JULY 10, 2009) - The antiviolence network Consistent Life (formerly called Seamless Garment Network) sees reasons for hope in Friday's meeting of President Barack Obama with Pope Benedict XVI. "We see a potential for global synergy here," explains Catholic Consistent Life Board member Richard Stith. "After all, Obama has expressed admiration for Cardinal Bernardin, who strongly favored consistent protection for all human beings. Also, the President seeks economic and social development, and the Pope's new encyclical points out emphatically that "openness to life is at the centre of true development." If the most powerful man in the world can be persuaded by defenders of life like Cardinal Bernardin and Pope Benedict, then abortion, war, and more subtle forms of violence to the human person are bound to diminish."

"The Catholic Church in recent years has advocated for the unborn, the poor, and the severely disabled; and spoken against wars and the use of the death penalty," elaborated Bill Samuel, the non-Catholic President of Consistent Life. "We hope Pope Benedict can influence the Obama Administration to move closer to the consistent ethic of life so eloquently advocated by Cardinal Bernardin."
