New Outreach Casts Wider Net for After Abortion Care

Abortion Changes You™ Creates a Safe Place for Catholics Impacted by Abortion

SAN DIEGO, CA (APRIL 24, 2008) - Did you know that every weekend there are people sitting around you in church who have been deeply affected by an abortion experience? One in every three women will have had an abortion by age 45. The majority of people who attend Mass every Sunday knows someone whose life has been affected by an abortion.

"When I was 18, I had an abortion. After years of struggling with self-destructive behaviors my experience brought me to church, but I wasn't sure that Jesus could forgive me. I often found myself thinking that if people in the nearby pews knew what I had done, they wouldn't shake my hand--and certainly wouldn't sit next to me," says Michaelene Fredenburg, creator of the new outreach Abortion Changes You™. This outreach is an invitation for those who have experienced abortion - men, women, grandparents, siblings, other family members and friends - to know that they are not alone and that healing resources are available.

Fredenburg explains, "Many men and women who have experienced abortion may have a sense that somehow God and the Church are "off-limits" for them and have difficulty finding hope and healing. Some do find their way into church, but struggle to move forward in their relationship with God and others. Many do not feel the freedom to ask for help within the church community."

The Catholic Church has an exemplary tradition of affirming life in all its stages and for providing after abortion healing outreach. However, there continues to be a growing number of people within the Church who feel estranged because of their abortion experience or the experience of a loved one. Abortion Changes You offers Catholics an important opportunity to communicate compassionately and effectively with those individuals who may have previously felt alienated.

"This Outreach meets a critical need of our day. Too often men and women bear the heavy burden of a past abortion silently and alone. The Abortion Changes You outreach gives voice to the reality that many experience after abortion. This outreach has the potential to bring hope to the broken hearted and to heal our culture," says Sr. Mary Elizabeth Wusinich, SV, Director of the Family Life/Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of New York and member of the Sisters of Life.

Abortion Changes You provides tools for Catholic men and women, lay leaders, ministerial workers, priests, and others to reach those in their congregations and communities who have been affected by abortion. The outreach uses dynamic resources, including an interactive Web site (www.AbortionChangesYou.com), a book, various multimedia and ministry tools (available at www.AbortionChangesYouResources.com), and connections to local counseling resources, including Catholic after abortion healing resources.

Abortion Changes You assists churches in offering a safe place for men and women to find community and healing after an abortion. Says Fredenburg, "It is my hope that this Web site and the additional outreach tools we have created will assist church leaders as they minister and communicate with all those affected by abortion."
