397 year old Catholic Classic Back in Print!

St Athanasius Press is proud to announce our release of the Unedited Reprint of the 1882 edition, Volume 1, of The Practice of Christian and Religious Perfection by Fr Alphonsus Rodriguez, S.J. Originally published in 1609. This is a Catholic Classic on spirituality that has been out of print far too long. 544 pages. Softcover.

"Fr Alphonsus Rodriguez, S.J. when twenty years of age he entered the Society of Jesus and after completing his studies taught moral theology for 12 years at the College of Monterey and subsequently filled the psots of master of novices for 12 more years, of rector for 17 years and of spiritual father at Cordova for 11 years.

As master of novices, he had under his charge Francis Suarez, the celebrated theologian. Fr Alphonsus Rodriguez's characteristics in these offices were care, diligence and charity. He was a religious of great piety and candour, hating all pride and ostentation. It was said of him by those who were personally acquainted with him, that his character and virtues were accurately depicted in "The Practice of Christian and Religious Perfection", published in Seville, 1609."

"This work is based on the material which he collected for his spiritual exhortations to his brethren, and published at the request of his superiors. Although the book thus written was primarily intended for the use of his religious brethren, yet he destined it also for the profit and edification of other religious and of laymen in the world. It is a book of practical instructions on all the virtues which go to make up the perfect Christian life, whether lived in the cloister or in the world." (Catholic Encyclopedia 1912)

This is a book that you are not going to be able to read in one sitting or several. Every page is loaded with spiritual wisdom and if we also try to apply some of that while we are reading it will take some time to finish the first volume and then one needs to reread it again. I certainly have been blessed from the reading of, the meditation of, the putting into practice of the spiritual wisdom contained in this volume in particular and the set of books in general--Publisher.

This is only Volume One (1). Volumes II & III are to be reprinted at a later date.
