CATHOLIC DOCTORS REACH OUT TO CARE FOR THOSE MOST IN NEED
LOS ANGELES, CA (February 13, 2013) - On March 8 - 10, 2013 Mission Doctors Association will host the annual Retreat/Seminar at Loyola Marymount University for Catholic doctors and their spouses who are interested in short-term medical missionary service.
The event will enable attendees to hear from those who have served both long and short term, as well as address the practical aspects of visas, licenses, issues of staying healthy abroad, as well discussions on cross cultural service.
Founded in 1959 by Msgr. Anthony Brouwers, MDA is the only organization that exclusively trains, sends and supports Catholic doctors and their families in service at mission hospitals and clinics.
With the sister program, Lay Mission-Helpers, these organizations have been calling the laity to serve in the missions, and have sent men, women, couples and families to 35 countries around the world; they have provided more than 2,000 years of service to the church. The unique contribution made by LMH and MDA’s lay missionaries is recognized internationally as people who come to share their gifts and live their faith.
Mission Doctors began a second program in 1997 to make it possible for Catholic doctors and their families to serve short-term, (one - three months) alongside those serving three years. This annual Retreat /Seminar provides the additional information for doctors considering this shorter service opportunity.
"What an amazing experience it was to leave the comforts of home and settle into the daily routines of a developing country a few days later," said Dr. Jim Hake, who served in Cameroon. "My days were spent attending hospitalized patients and staffing the outpatient clinic. Malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Gastroenteritis and Dehydration were the most frequent problems dealt with." He added "We witnessed a strong presence of the Catholic faith in the community and hospital. The happiness of the people was impressive despite a lack of material wealth."
Mission Doctors Association sponsors this annual Retreat/Seminar for physicians, dentists and their spouses who are considering short-term (one to three months) mission service in Africa or Latin America.
