What you need to know about a coming WAR WITH MACHINES: Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking warn about artificial intelligence

Lead tech giants warn about future AI programs

It is becoming more apparent that leaders in the fields of technology and science do not trust possible artificial intelligence. No less than Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has come out warning the public about the potential dangers of AI, joining the likes of Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk.

Highlights

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Gates joins the famed physicist and Internet mogul in his warning.

During a question and answer thread on the social media site Reddit, Gates shared his thoughts about machines that could actually think for themselves.

"I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence," he said. "First, the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that, though, the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern."

"I agree with Elon Musk and some of the others on this and don't understand why some people are not concerned," Gates continued.

Gates, the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which he runs with his wife, joined Musk and hundreds of other researchers and professors who want proper safeguards to be put in place to research and develop potential artificial intelligences without humans losing control.

Right now, artificial intelligence gone rouge is a staple of the science fiction genre in books, movies and video games. "The Matrix" trilogy, "I, Robot" the "Terminator" franchise, "2001: A Space Odyssey", the video game franchises "Portal" and "Mass Effect" all have the rise of intelligent machines turning against humans, but for most people this remains firmly in the realm of fantasy.

But machines are getting smarter. IBM's Watson supercomputer moved from playing Jeopardy, to conducting medical diagnosis and research. Even earlier this month, a new machine was released that can win against anyone at poker.

2015 can be a year for more than just physical renewal, let Catholic Online help you with your spiritual health!

In October of 2014, Musk said that developing AI is akin to "summoning the demon" and has invested heavily into watching further development.

In a letter written in May 2014 to "The Independent," Hawking said: "Whereas the short-term impact of AI depends on who controls it, the long-term impact depends on whether it can be controlled at all."
