LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Secretary of State, John Kerry was recently quoted in a speech saying that al Qaeda and ISIS are "engaging in criminal conduct rooted in alienation, poverty, thrill-seeking and other factors." Not once did he mention extremism.

To portray the massive amounts of attacks and recent terrorist activities by ISIS and al Qaeda in that light is downplaying the gravity of what the entire world is dealing with.

Put some sparkle in your life today!

"If that's really the cause, then the solution would be just to give them a trophy, give them a hug, give them a good-paying job, $10,000, and a skateboard so they can go and get their thrills and say, 'OK, great, they are going to be happy and they won't be fighting anymore.' That's not the case," Iraq war veteran and Democratic Representative from Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard told Greta Van Susteren on Fox News in response to Kerry's statement.

"Unfortunately we have people who are living in poverty all around the world, people who have this same feeling of alienation from their government. But they're not terrorists."

"This is not just about words. It's not about semantics," Gabbard continued. "It's really about having a real, true understanding of who our enemy is and how important that is, that we have to understand what their motivation is and what their ideology is - the radical Islamic ideology that is fueling them."

Knowing what you're dealing with seems like the obvious first step in defeating the enemy. According to Gabbard, the Obama Administration is failing to truly recognize what the world is up against by ignoring the radical Islamic ideology. If you know how they internally feel, a better understanding of their actions, both present and in the future, can be reached and used to prevent more devastation.

"It's a real problem because of a very simple reason, actually," Gabbard said. "And that is something I learned that is military 101, but something that's easy for everyone to understand, and that is if you are at war, which we are, you have to know who your enemy is in order to defeat them. You've got to recognize what's fueling them, what's motivating them, what are their strategies and tactics that they're using in order to be able to defeat them and prevent them from attacking the American people."
