LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- "An ancient clay vessel has been presented to the world by the Israeli Antiques Authority. The unusual vessel features a figurine on the neck of its spout. The figure appears to be deep in thought, striking a resemblance to Rodin's "The Thinker."

The statue is about 3,800 years old and was uncovered in a Tel Aviv suburb from a construction site. It is the job of the Israeli Antiques Authority to carry out excavations of construction sites and preserve antiquities. Israel, as one of the oldest inhabited regions of the world, is awash in
antiquities. Many are buried or hidden, both deliberately and by the forces of time and nature.

Most of these antiquities are standard items of the period. Coins are a popular find, as are other everyday objects. But sometimes one of those objects is peculiar and worth sharing.

The clay vessel was found alongside other items including daggers, an axe, sheep and donkey bones. Experts think the vessel is part of a funeral offering. Whomever was buried there was likely an important person.

The figurine on the jar has hauntingly wide eyes, a common feature in art from the period. What is the figure contemplating? What does it represent? Those are mysteries that will persist. The jar was discovered in pieces, but was painstakingly repaired.

There is no word on if or when the jar will be displayed.
