LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to the Daily Mail, an 18-year-old Jihad attempted to detonate a homemade backpack during Mass.
The bomb burned without igniting, prompting the boy to use an axe.
The teen rushed 60-year-old Priest Albert Pandiangan and managed to slash his arm before the congregation separated the two.
Members of the St. Yoseph Church in Medan, Indonesia wrested the axe from the teen and successfully detained him until authorities could arrive.
By the time officers arrived, the boy had already been bloodied, presumably in the attempt to grab the axe and get him away from the priest.
Chief detective Nur Fallah explained: "Somebody tried to kill the priest by pretending to attend the church service and at that time tried to explode something, like a firecracker, but the firecracker didn't explode, it only fumed."
Luckily, Father Pandiangan only suffered a slight wound and was immediately treated at a nearby hospital.
Hundreds gathered at the church and one unconscious woman had to be carried from the scene.
The teen was carrying an ID, which indicated he was one of the religious majorities in the country - Muslim.
As minorities, Christians are at risk within Muslim-dominated countries and continue to be victims of religious intolerance.
