Zagat has released a survey of the best burgers in the United States. Sure to inspire controversy and more than a little debate - all of it involving delicious seared beef patties and freshly cooked buns, the winners range from fast food winners In-N-Out Burgers and upscale varieties such as Peter Luger.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - In its inaugural "coast to coast" survey, Zagat polled thousands of people in 15 major U.S. cities. They were asked to rate their favorite burgers on a three-point scale based on flavor, ingredients and value.
New York's top-ranked choice was the Luger-Burger at $12.95 at Brooklyn steakhouse Peter Luger. The Luger-Burger beat out popular newcomer Umami Burger and Danny Meyer's Shake Shack, known for drawing long lines in Madison Square Park.

West Coast chain In-N-Out's Double-Double at a more than reasonable $3.45, a double-patty beef burger with sauce, American cheese, lettuce, tomato and grilled onion, was the winner in Los Angeles.

The Original db Burger at a hefty $34 at Daniel Boulud's db Bistro Moderne won over Miami, Florida, diners with its decadent toppings such as black truffle and foie gras.

Highland Tap & Burger took Denver, Colorado's top spot with its Shroom Luva's burger at $10. This concoction comes with sautéed mushrooms, white-truffle aioli, Emmentaler cheese, and for an additional $11, what one participant called "some of the best-quality foie gras in town."
Atlanta, Georgia's winning entry - Illegal Food's The Hank at $11, combines a juicy burger with American cheese, sweet onion, iceberg lettuce and special sauce.

Cheese was a key ingredient in all three Texas winners: Houston joint Kenny & Ziggy's In Queso Emergency! ($16.95) was described as "oversized cheesy gooiness," while The Grape's Classic Cheeseburger at $14 won for Dallas and Mighty Fine Burgers Fries Shakes won over Austin eaters with The Classic with Cheese at $6.79.
The prison-themed restaurant Lockdown Bar & Grill won Chicago's vote with its Lockdown Warden, which features a bacon-infused blend of beef, Merkts cheddar, fried leeks, shallots and truffle aioli.

Burger Americain's Le Diplomat at $15 took the prize in Washington, D.C., with its stack of two Pat LaFrieda patties, and San Francisco diners went for Nopa's Grass-Fed Hamburger at $14.
The top ten burgers in each city were given a score of up to 30, in which the points it received for flavor, value and ingredients were averaged.
