LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- Jionni Conforti, 33, is a woman who wants to be a man, and has asked for a hysterectomy to facilitate what she believes will advance the process. Conforti has filed a lawsuit which says the Roman Catholic, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center discriminated against her in 2015 when it refused to perform a hysterectomy. The hospital is located in Paterson, New Jersey. Conforti is from nearby Totowa.

Conforti identifies herself as a man, and refers to herself as such. Her photos show what looks largely like a man's body. She has facial hair under her chin in one image. These appearances are the product of grooming and hormones, but sex, male or female, is a product of one's DNA, and it cannot be changed or reassigned, even with surgery.

The hospital declined to be responsible for the procedure citing its Catholic affiliation as the reason. Conforti however says she felt disrespected and humiliated. She said the decision made her depressed.

In addition, Conforti cited the danger of suicide which is common in the transgender community. She is seeking monetary damages in addition to a requirement the hospital perform the surgery.

The hospital says it has not seen the lawsuit and cannot yet comment. According to the lawsuit, the hospital's own patient bill of rights says that it guarantees medical services without discrimination based on "gender identity or expression."

Unfortunately, this is a product of a culture that degrades life and worships sex and death. It sows confusion in the minds of people and calls evil good and good evil. Conforti deserves love, care and compassion, but this does not mean that Catholic teaching can change, or that a Catholic institution should be compelled to participate in a procedure which is contrary to the Church's teaching and the Natural Law.

There are many people within our society who struggle with issues concerning their sexual identity. They are entitled to as much love and acceptance as any other human being. But love and acceptance does not mean we must be compelled to condone that which we sincerely believe to be sinful. Genuine love does not abide sin, or else it is not genuine love.

Nor should any Church institution or Christian Medical Professional be forced to violate a  constitutionally protected right to practice the faith.
