Bee Gee Robin Gibb in coma, reported near death

Singer has had long history of health issues

Bee Gee Robin Gibb is in a coma, after battling pneumonia. His family are keeping a close vigil on the musician, who is reported near death. Gibb is reportedly in a private hospital in London.

Robin Gibb was diagnosed with colon cancer following surgery, which spread to his liver. Last month he announced that he was in remission from the disease. Doctors believe that Gibb, 62, has a secondary tumor, his representative Doug Wright said.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Gibb's health had been in steady decline in 2010 following emergency surgery to treat a blocked bowel. Further surgery to treat a twisted bowel was also required.

Robin Gibb was diagnosed with colon cancer after the surgery, which spread to his liver. Last month he announced that he was in remission from the disease. Doctors believe that Gibb, 62, has a secondary tumor, his representative Doug Wright said.

Gibb's twin brother and band mate, Maurice had died nine years ago at the age of 53 years old from the same condition. In addition, his brother Andy died at age 30 in 1988 from a heart infection.

The singer, a native Australian rose to pop fame as one third of the Bee Gees with his brothers Maurice and Barry. The Bee Gees began their career with folk songs and the odd pop hit, such as "Spicks and Specks." It was only in the Disco era that the brothers enjoyed multiplatinum success, providing the soundtrack for the classic disco drama "Saturday Night Fever" in 1977.

The Bee Gees enjoyed a number of hits during their 45-year career, including "To Love Somebody," "Night Fever" and "Stayin' Alive."

"We are all hoping and praying that he will pull through," said the message on Gibb's Web site, which noted that reports "are true" about Gibb being in a coma and having contracted pneumonia.

News of Gibb's condition elicited a flood of support on social network sites and in the music community.

Rocker Peter Frampton tweeted "My positive thoughts go out to Robin Gibb and all of the Gibb family. I am wishing you the best and hope for a quick recovery. Much love 2 U."

Other people offering their thoughts and prayers online included Julian Lennon, the son of John Lennon, and former Jackson 5 member Jackie Jackson.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, the Bee Gees have sold more than 200 million albums, and their soundtrack album to "Saturday Night Fever" was the top-selling album until Michael Jackson's "Thriller" claimed that distinction in the 1980s.

While often in the background as brother Barry sang lead vocals, Robin Gibb stepped forward on several top tunes, including "I Started a Joke" and "I've Gotta Get a Message to You."

Also, this family has been through so much, the mother is 91 and has had to bury three of her sons already. This family needs prayer.
