Fatherhood: Prayer and Virtue Make a Man a Real Leader

St. Joseph exemplifies the graces of the Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary

HAVERTOWN, PA (July 5, 2011) - More than 1,700 years before St. Louis de Montfort was born, another man made what may be the most well-known Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary. Although it has never been called such, how else can one truly describe the divinely-inspired decisions and actions of St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus?

"St. Joseph committed himself and his life to caring for our Savior and the Virgin Mother of God - despite cultural norms that, at that time, would have led any man in his position to abandon this woman, his fiancé, who suddenly and inexplicably was found with child," said Anthony Mullen, executive director of the Children of the Father Foundation and the MyConsecration.org website. "We hope that the powerful example of St. Joseph's witness will attract men and women to the same devotion - through the Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary."

Mullen also noted that one of the most profound and important events in history - the "Miracle of the Sun" during Our Lady's Oct. 13, 1917, apparition at Fatima, Portugal - was immediately preceded by St. Joseph and the baby Jesus appearing and blessing the world.

"In his wonderful book, 'Fatima for Today,' Fr. Andrew Apostoli (C.F.R.) discusses at length St. Joseph's pivotal role in the concepts of prayer, protection and perfection that are the fundamental tenets of the Total Consecration," Mullen said. "After noting that St. Joseph is the only saint to have appeared with Our Lady during her multiple Fatima apparitions, Fr. Apostoli writes:

"'(St. Joseph) represents the roles of husband and father, which sorely need to be strengthened today. St. Joseph was certainly a faithful and loving husband to our Blessed Lady. ... We need the protection and intercession of this great saint in our struggle against the demonic forces that even today are attempting to destroy the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church.'

"It is our hope," Mullen added, "that fathers ... all men ... will follow St. Joseph's example by making their own Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary."
