RIVER FOREST, IL (November 17, 2009) - Dominican University’s Siena Center will present the classic Christmas film It’s a Wonderful Life and explore the film’s meaning and spiritual significance with Patrick McCormick, culture and religion columnist for U.S. Catholic magazine. The program, entitled “It’s a Wonderful Village: Bedford Falls as the Promised Land,” will be held Sunday, December 6 at 1:00 p.m. and Monday December 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Priory Campus Auditorium, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest.
It’s a Wonderful Life confronts us with a choice between the village of Bedford Falls and the slums of Pottersville. McCormick will examine how Frank Capra’s tale of the creation and salvation of Bedford Falls echoes God’s deliverance of the Hebrews to a promised land flowing with milk, honey and justice. He will also make comparisons to Jesus’ proclamation of the good news of God’s reign. The discussion will also look at how the film and these biblical stories can offer a model of the kinds of economic and political communities we are called to build today.
McCormick teaches Christian ethics at Gonzaga University and writes a regular column on culture and Christianity for U.S. Catholic magazine. Admission to the event is $5. For more information, please call (708) 714-9105 or visit www.siena.dom.edu.
Dominican University established the Siena Center to engage the critical issues of church and society in the light of faith and scholarship. The center was named for St. Catherine of Siena, a 14th century laywoman who worked for the reform of the church and justice in the world. Her passionate devotion to the central issues of church and society inspires the work of the center in its schedule of lectures, symposia, workshops, retreats, research and seminars.
