Books on Nature by Rupp and Merton Chosen for Spiritual Book Associates' Spring Season

Notre Dame, IN - January 23, 2003. Books on nature by Joyce Rupp and Thomas Merton are among the Featured Books for Spiritual Book Associates' Spring 2003 season.

Spiritual Book Associates is a popular Catholic book club with members worldwide. It was founded in 1934 by Fr. Francis X. Talbot of America magazine, who called SBA "the book club of the soul." Spiritual Book Associates is now part of Ave Maria Press.

During the year, each Spiritual Book Associates member receives the same 8 Featured Books. Featured Books are delivered to members in September, October, November, December, February, March, April, and May.

To be chosen as a Spiritual Book Associates Featured Book, a book must go through a rigorous selection process. Spiritual Book Associates editors read many manuscripts from a variety of publishers. Only those upcoming books that are both very readable and substantial become Spiritual Book Associates Featured Books. Each year there's a mix of serious books and lighter books.

Because Spiritual Book Associates editors know that people are very busy, SBA books usually run between 128 to 160 pages long. SBA books have traditionally been hardbound.

Joyce Rupp's newest book, Rest Your Dreams on a Little Twig, is SBA's February Featured Book. Rupp's work is extremely popular with readers. This is Rupp's first book of poetry and was generated by Rupp's observations on nature. It's a very discussible book that should be a big hit, and will especially hit home as winter turns to spring.

In Walking With God In a Fragile World, renowned spiritual writers wrestle with the problems of the human condition in the post-9/11 world. The book is right on point as the international community is looking for peaceful solutions to problems of violence around the world. Contributors include Elie Wiesel, Theodore Hesburgh, Frederick Buechner, Stanley Hauerwas, William Sloan Coffin, Wendy Doniger, Karen Armstrong and others.

Do "real" Catholics question why they do or don't do things, like fasting, going to confession, praying the rosary? Mary Sherry tackles these challenging questions with humor and surrender in Sometimes I Haven't Got a Prayer and Other "Real" Catholic Adventures, which is the Featured Book for April.

When the Trees Say Nothing: Writing on Nature by Thomas Merton is the first collection of Merton's work on nature. It was edited by Kathleen Deignan, CND, the founder of the Iona Spirituality Institute, and is the May Featured Book.

Each Featured Book has its own Readers Group Guide, which helps makes the Spiritual Book Associates program an attractive choice for reading groups.
