Principal Named for New Wilmington Diocesan School

Saltarelli, Bishop of the Diocese of Wilmington has appointed Sister LaVerne King, RSM, as the first principal of Christ the Teacher Catholic School, it was announced today. Sister LaVerne, a member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, has over thirty years experience in education and eighteen years of educational administration experience. She is presently the principal of Saint Alphonsus School in Maple Glen, Pennsylvania. "In naming you to this position, I have every confidence that you will enrich our Diocesan educational community in a variety of ways," said Bishop Saltarelli in his Letter of Appointment to Sister LaVerne. "The foundation of Christ the Teacher Catholic School will in large part rest with you, but from the beginning it has been the dream and the child of the Diocese of Wilmington. This Diocesan family will be right there with you as together we prepare for the first elementary school in almost forty years." Construction of Christ the Teacher Catholic School, on a 35-acre lot at Route 40 and Frazer Road in Glasgow, Delaware, is slated to begin next month and its opened planned for September 2002. When completed, this regional Catholic school will accommodate 600 students in grades kindergarten through eight. Sister's appointment is effective July 1, 2001. While serving as principal of Saint Alphonsus School, Sister LaVerne participated in a school expansion that included a computer lab, multi-media center/library, playground, offices, a gymnasium and additional classrooms. She developed a service education program for the school as well as implemented a curriculum based technology program and introduced global languages into the curriculum. Sister also completed the reaccredidation process for the Middle States Association and facilitated the National Blue Ribbon application process. A native of New York, Sister attended Bishop Egan High School in Levittown, Pennsylvania before entering the Sisters of Mercy. She holds a B.S. in elementary Education from Gwynedd-Mercy College, an M.S. in Elementary Education from Beaver College, an M.S. in Educational Administration from Gwynedd-Mercy College and has participated in intensive study of the Spanish language and cross cultural insertion at the Maryknoll Instituto do Idiomas, Cochabamba, Bolivia. Her teaching and administration career has taken her to schools in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida and Peru where she served as Director of an Occupational Educational Center for Women in the city of Chulucanus. Brother James Malone, CFX, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Wilmington, said, "Sister LaVerne will bring many gifts to her new position. She will bring this new school into being and will be a leader able to successfully interact with the founding pastors, parents, teachers, and, most importantly, the children who will come to us for an education." Governance of Christ the Teacher Catholic School will be by an advisory board from the four sponsoring parishes: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Bear, Holy Family Parish in Newark St. Jo- seph in Middletown and St. Margaret of Scotland in Glasgow. The Diocese of Wilmington is building of two new Catholic Elementary schools with funds being raised as part of its $50 million Bringing the Vision to Life Capital Stewardship Campaign. Christ the Teacher Catholic School is one of those schools. The other school, Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, is slated to be built next year in Ocean Pines, Maryland. The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington was established in 1868 and comprises 56 parishes, 20 missions and over 30 schools serving the State of Delaware and the nine counties of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
