Affirmations and Modifications Granted to LIFE TEEN Model of Youth Liturgy

AFFIRMATION AND MODIFICATIONS GRANTED TO LIFE TEEN MODEL OF YOUTH LITURGY

Phoenix, AZ (August 2004) - LIFE TEEN's founder, Monsignor Dale Fushek, announced publicly this week that modifications within LIFE TEEN's model of youth Liturgies will be implemented in early October.

LIFE TEEN, a leading international youth ministry, has served as a model of comprehensive youth ministry and liturgy within the US and 18 other countries for nearly 20 years. The organization is credited for its dynamic Masses which are celebrated in a way that relates to teenagers and their families. These Masses are known for the draw they have with young people through quality liturgical implementation including relevant music, teen lectors and servers, and homilies geared for teens.

Since the most recent release of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) in 2000, by direction of the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), all parishes and Liturgies have been affected by the changes required for enhanced uniformity in the Church. Examples include the required period of silence at the beginning of Mass, and that after the words of consecration and before receiving communion, an appropriate sign of adoration for the faithful is a bow of the head. For nearly two years, LIFE TEEN has worked in conjunction with the USCCB and Monsignor Moroney, executive director of the Bishop's Committee on Liturgy (BLC), regarding impending modifications, specifically on how changes should be implemented within parishes with the LIFE TEEN ministry. Cardinal Arinze, Prefect of the Congregation of Divine Worship, in Rome, provided a supportive response of LIFE TEEN, with guidelines on how the GIRM should be implemented within the LIFE TEEN ministry.

In a letter recently sent to US Bishops, Diocesan Youth Offices, Priests and Youth Leaders, Msgr. Dale Fushek stated, "As the founder of this youth movement, I am writing to confirm our adherence to the new GIRM, and as always, our joyful obedience to our own local Bishops. In this spirit of obedience, we are asking all parishes that implement the LIFE TEEN model to make the following changes." One of the most significant and visible modifications discontinues teens from circling the altar during the Eucharistic prayer. This arm-in-arm gathering has been a symbol of LIFE TEEN's mission of leading teens closer to Christ. This practice has also provided opportunity for criticism of LIFE TEEN from those who disagree with making the liturgy relevant to the teens within the parish and community. Despite criticism, LIFE TEEN's recognition that the youth are vital to the Church has proven effective over the past two decades with an increase in vocations to the priesthood and parish renewal in areas where LIFE TEEN has thrived.

A video produced by LIFE TEEN offering direction and instruction on parish-level implementation was sent to 950 parishes this week. The video opens with a message from Monsignor Mononey, offering affirmation and encouragement to these parishes. Priests, music ministers and liturgists will also gather in Arizona mid-September at the LIFE TEEN Liturgy and Music Conference to discuss the implementation and implications of the changes.

Upon making these modifications, Cardinal Arinze assured Bishop Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix, that because of the faithfulness and the presence within the United States, LIFE TEEN will serve as yet an even stronger model of youth Liturgy.
