Major media outlets ignore the throngs who stood up for life

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (January 25, 2012) – It’s always big news when tens of thousands of people gather publicly for rallies about one of America’s – if not the world’s – most significant issues. Isn’t it?

Apparently not, given the mainstream-media coverage of the Jan. 21 West Coast Walk for Life in San Francisco and the Jan. 23 March for Life in Washington, D.C. The former drew 50,000 participants, the latter upwards of a half-million. What neither event drew, however, was significant coverage from major media outlets.

“Living in a liberal bubble such as San Francisco has accustomed me to liberal bias in the mainstream media,” said West Coast Walk for Life co-chair Eva Muntean, “but this year’s non-performance surprised even me. The Walk for Life brought out approximately 50,000 people, closed down Market Street and caused the rerouting of 18 bus lines. But the coverage consisted of one TV story, one radio segment, and a photo and two sentences in the San Francisco Chronicle.”

“The lack of media coverage is really shameful,” said bestselling author Teresa Tomeo, who attended the March for Life in Washington, D.C., and provided television commentary for the EWTN Catholic network. “The members of the press are supposed to be public servants providing clear information on timely events and topics. The sheer numbers alone – 50 thousand in San Francisco and 300-400 thousand in Washington – should be reason enough for headlines and lead stories on the evening news, not to mention the fact that these rallies and marches deal with crucial, hot-button issues that are on the minds of most Americans and especially during an election year. Instead, we may get a story here and there; but they are certainly few and far between, and often leaning very much in favor of staunch abortion advocates.”

Many in the crowd have their own tragic stories to tell, but Tomeo was one of the few media members around to hear any of them.

“One of the most appalling aspects of the lack of coverage is ignoring the powerful stories of those who suffered from their decisions to either have or help procure an abortion,” she said. “These voices need to be heard – not silenced or neglected – as they raise real concerns about a billion dollar industry and its horrendous treatment of women.”
