WATERTOWN, MA (January 13, 2012) –Brother George Van Grieken, FSC, and Anthony Ryan To Be Interviewed on Live Talk Show of the CatholicTV® Network.
On January 16, 2012, Brother George Van Grieken, director of vocation ministry, De La Salle Christian Brothers, and Anthony Ryan, The Desert Fathers and the Beginnings of Monasticism, will be featured on the CatholicTV Network’s nationally broadcasted live talk show; This is the Day.
The De La Salle Christian Brothers have as their mission “to provide a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor, according to the ministry entrusted to them by the church.” (From the Brothers’ Rule) This ministry of education seeks realistic ways of touching hearts and teaching minds of students everywhere so as to prepare them as mature members of society and the church.
For the Brother, the ministry of education is an extension of the Gospel. Through prayer and work, he unfolds the salvation of young men and women and shapes his own relationship to God. His life is a life of study, of teaching, of personal and community prayer, and of real community with his brothers and with all those whom he encounters within a Lasallian school or agency.
It’s all about a certain kind of education that St. John Baptist de La Salle brought to life in the late 17th century and turned into an educational movement that today reaches beyond national borders, sectarian differences, and negative educational expectations.
Br. George is currently the Director of Vocation Ministry for the District of San Francisco and resides in Napa; CA. Br. George discusses his experience during his younger years.
“During high school, I went to a Brothers’ school and was impressed with the character of the Brothers who taught me. Pretty soon I was thinking of joining them. And then I did. Over the years, I’ve never regretted that decision. I’ve taught in grammar schools, high schools, and been able to teach in places like the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Australia. It’s great to be part of an international family that keeps the same spirit no matter where you are. The Brothers continue to impress and inspire me every day.”
As CatholicTV continues to support Vocations Awareness, we invite you to learn more about Br. George’s experience and the De La Salle Christian Brothers at: www.brothersvocation.org.
Also on This is the Day January 17, 2012 will be Ignatius Press Marketing Director Anthony Ryan to discuss to the book The Desert Fathers and the Beginnings of Monasticism. This book takes the reader back to the hour when monasticism was born and describes the life of those revolutionary Christians who sought God in the Egyptian desert. The focus of the book is the life and work of Saint Anthony, whose experiences of the spiritual life have a timeless beauty and validity, even for those not called to live as a monk.
