LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) -- Census Bureau statistics have found that 44.6 percent of California residents do not speak English in the home, and 18.6 percent do not speak English very well. The statistics apply to all members of households over the age of five.
California is home to millions of immigrants from around the world, with many coming from Mexico and various Asian countries. About 27 percent of Californians are foreign born.
The next closest state to California is Texas, where 35.6 percent of people speak a language other than English at home.
Most of these people are bilingual to some degree, with many able to speak English fluently. This is more than can be said for many Americans who cannot speak a second language with fluency. Many schools require students learn second languages, but students have little training outside of school.
There are concerns over the number of people who do not speak English, but even if immigrants do not assimilate, their children almost always do. And since language acquisition a natural phenomenon, even people who refuse assimilation still learn some English.
Nationwide, about 13.5 percent of all people win the United States were born in other countries, making the USA one of the most welcoming nations to immigrants, despite claims to the contrary by those on the liberal left.
Legal immigration to the United States remains welcome.
