La decisión del gobierno de Estados Unidos, encabezado por Barack Obama, de cerrar su embajada en la Santa Sede, y trasladar las oficinas respectivas a un anexo de la embajada en Italia, "es otra manifestación de la antipatía de este gobierno tanto hacia los católicos y hacia el Vaticano, y a los cristianos en el Medio Oriente", dijo el exembajador de ese país ante la Santa Sede, James Nicholson.

WASHINGTON D.C. (ACI/EWTN Noticias) - En declaraciones al sitio web Catholic Vote, Nicholson, que fue embajador ante la Santa Sede entre 2001 y 2005, advirtió que la embajada en el Vaticano "es un puesto clave para la intermediación en tantas soberanías, pero particularmente en el Medio Oriente."

"Este es cualquier cosa menos un buen momento para disminuir la talla de este puesto. Disminuir la talla de este puesto es disminuir su influencia."

De acuerdo a lo informado por el Departamento de Estado de EEUU a la prensa local el 25 de noviembre, la decisión de cerrar la embajada en el Vaticano se debe a razones económicas, buscando ahorrar 1,4 millones de dólares al año.

Sin embargo, James Nicholson aseguró que "el Departamento de Estado ha querido por mucho tiempo hacer esto. Surgió cuando yo era embajador. Les expliqué la locura de esto y se fueron. Pero ahora parecen determinados a hacerlo".

La percepción con esta decisión, apuntó, es "que los Estados Unidos están mostrando una falta de aprecio por la relevancia de su socio diplomático en el Vaticano".

Para Catholic Vote, la decisión del gobierno de Obama se debe a que "los grupos anti-familia odian al Vaticano. En el escenario internacional, el Vaticano es un feroz promotor de la libertad religiosa, la dignidad de toda vida humana y la familia tradicional. Y la Santa Sede se ha opuesto vigorosamente al imperialismo pro-aborto impulsado por Planned Parenthood y otros durante décadas".

Planned Parenthood, la compañía abortista más grande del mundo, apoyó con 15 millones de dólares a la campaña para la reelección de Barack Obama, y asumió el crédito por su victoria en noviembre de 2012.
