LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - According to United Nations human rights spokesman Rupert Colville, "the full extent of civilian casualties is not yet known, but reports received by [the U.N. mission in Iraq], to this point suggest that the number of people killed in recent days may run into the hundreds and the number of wounded is said to be approaching 1,000."
There is only one true war that God favors: Fight world hunger today.
According to the UNAMI report, Iraqi government forces stopped people from fleeing the city at checkpoints, and now ISIS is using similar checkpoints to hunt down anyone with an association with the Iraqi government.
The organization has interviewed some of the 500,000 people who fled Mosul, and a further 40,000 people are estimated to have fled from Tikrit and Samara by the International Organization for Migration.
"We've received reports of the summary execution of Iraqi army soldiers during the capture of Mosul and of 17 civilians in one particular street in Mosul city on June 11," Colville said.
"There was also the execution of a court employee in the Dawasa are in central Mosul and the execution of 12 people in Dawasa who were believed to have been serving with Iraq security services or possibly with members of the police."
There were reports that prisoners released by the militants from Mosul prison who were out looking to exact revenge on those who were responsible for their arrest and sentencing. Some of these prisoners traveled to Tikrit and killed seven former prison officers.
An ISIS spokesman also released a statement that their goal was to exterminate Shia Muslims, who make up most of Iraq's population.
As the militants push onwards to Baghdad, Iran sent 500 Revolutionary Guard troops to fight alongside Iraqi security forces in Diyala province. Iran is another predominantly Shia Muslim nation, and have become worried by the current events as Sunni tribal leaders join with ISIS.
