The 86-year-old pontiff has been recovering in the hospital after undergoing a three-hour surgery for an incisional hernia. Surgeons successfully removed scar tissue and repaired a hernia in the pope's abdominal wall, which was located at the site of a previous surgical incision.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated on June 14 that the medical staff at the hospital have reported a regular and complication-free recovery for the pope, leading them to plan his discharge in the coming days. Throughout his hospitalization, Pope Francis has been working from the hospital's papal medical suite, where he has also dedicated time to prayer in the chapel and received the Eucha

As a result of the pope's recovery, all of his public and private audiences have been canceled until June 18.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the surgeon who operated on Pope Francis on June 7, expressed confidence that there would be no medical obstacles preventing the pope from proceeding with his planned travels to Portugal and Mongolia in August after he has fully recovered.
