El P. Michael Brehl, Superior General de los Redentoristas, llamó a los misioneros a "acompañar con la oración al pueblo filipino, especialmente a las personas que residen en la región más afectada" por el terremoto de 7,1 grados que el 15 de octubre golpeó el archipiélago.

ROMA (ACI/EWTN Noticias) - El terremoto se produjo a las 8:00 am (hora local) y, según relató el P. Rafael Vieira a la agencia Fides, "por suerte, el martes era día festivo y muchas escuelas y oficinas estaban cerradas, y sin duda, esto ha reducido el número de víctimas". El sismo dejó más de 90 muertos y cerca de 170 heridos.

"En Bohol, la ciudad más afectada por el terremoto, hay muchas iglesias históricas que datan de hace más de cuatro siglos. Muchas de estas iglesias han sido destruidas o gravemente dañadas por el terremoto. En Cebú, la Basílica del Santo Niño, una iglesia histórica y un importante centro de culto para el pueblo filipino, se ha visto dañada por el terremoto", añadió el sacerdote.

La Congregación de los Redentoristas, informa el misionero, cuenta con una serie de casas en la zona, incluida la Casa Provincial, una iglesia grande, una comunidad y una casa de retiros. Según noticias recibidas por las comunidades locales, todos los miembros están bien y en los edificios religiosos solo hay daños leves.

El P. Vieira dijo que "la mayoría de las víctimas se encuentran en Bohol. Al terremoto le han seguido algunos temblores más. Esto ha generado más ansiedad y muchas personas han tenido que abandonar sus hogares". Los misioneros están trabajando en la ayuda de emergencia y confortando a la población afectada.
