Rare reaction to dog saliva ends mom into septic shock

Forty-nine-year-old Christine Caron of Ottawa, Canada had a rare reaction to her dog's saliva. Bitten, she went into septic shock - necessitating the amputation of both legs and part of an arm. Such drastic circumstances would devastate anyone, but for Caron, she says "I'm not the type of person that wants to curl up and die. I want to live."

Christine Caron's family has since set up a fundraising website for her, hoping to pay for her medical costs and purchase of prosthetics.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Caron has tried to regain motion in her right hand after losing both legs and her left arm after the septic shock cut off blood supplies to her limbs.

The single mother of four's ordeal began when one of her dogs infected her with bacteria that sent her body into a septic shock.

Placed in an induced coma for a month and a half three days, one of Caron's Shih Tzu mixes bit her hand during a game of tug-of-war last May. When she woke up, as she told reporters, "My feet were black, and my arm was sort of - it was mummified."

She had a life-threatening presence of disease-causing bacteria in her blood stream, doctors told her, which cut off the blood flow to her nose, toes and fingers.

Caron also lost the ability to move the one hand that didn't need amputating.

"I wake up every morning, and I check, and I'm like 'Oh drat,'" she said of her hands absent mobility while doing her best to maintain a smile. "You know you could think that it was a nightmare, but it's not."

Caron's infection is extremely rare, with only about 200 septic shock cases linked to the bacteria commonly found in dog saliva in the last 25 years, according to Health Canada.
Septic shock occurs when a serious infection leads to life-threatening low blood pressure.

Caron's family and doctors are hopeful she'll be able to move her hand again, though only time will tell.

Caron's family has since set up a fundraising website for her, hoping to pay for her medical costs and purchase of prosthetics.

"She is determined to keep it and is currently awaiting surgery for debridement and skin grafts on that hand," her daughter writes on a fundraising page established for her mother.

Caron is determined and an "amazing" single mother of four -- but also an uninsured person who hasn't given up on her to-do list.
Her fundraiser has drawn just over $35,500 that will go toward prosthetics, a wheelchair, medical bills and other needs.
