Products are being sold in 23 states. The children, elderly and those with weak immune systems may have serious and fatal infections caused by the bacteria. The consuming public has been advised to not buy any product by the Blue Bell Creameries.
According to CDC's investigation, they made comparisons with the patients dating back 2010 up to the current outbreak. They were able to connect similarities in the infected patients' DNA.
There has been recorded data of people who dying of listeria, three of them were from Kansas. There is information on the death of 10 people from 4 states who were infected with the bacteria believed to have come from eating Blue Bell products.
The CDC added there are people who were sick in other states, five of them from Kansas, three from Texas, one got sick in Oklahoma, and another one in Arizona, also with listeria.
The deputy director of the CDC Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases, Dr. Robert Tauxe, says in a press statement that the origin of the bacteria strain is still unidentified. He adds that the strain seems to be coming in just a single factory since the strain seems to remain the same for the past five years.
Tauxe also claims the strain that was discovered in Texas is different from the one found in Oklahoma. He thinks that there are different groups of strains that are not related and are affecting these 2 ice cream company factories.
Dr. Tauxe believes that through the years, there might be other cases where the sickness was not diagnosed. The DNA patterns is what helps them compare and study similarities with all the patients getting ill from listeria.
After tests showed Blue Bell's half-gallon chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream to contain listeria, Blue Bell decided to pull out all their products in the market. According to their written statement, they have done this since they believe that all their other products contain the same bacteria.
