Both 'Rock of Ages,' 'That's my Boy' tank this past Father's Day weekend

While it starred Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand, "Rock of Ages" tanked at the nation's box offices this past Father's Day weekend. Ditto for the father-themed Adam Sandler comedy, "That's My Boy." It was last weekend's holdovers "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" and "Prometheus" that kept movie theaters afloat, staying at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively with $35.5 million and $20.2 million.

Even the star power of Tom Cruise couldn't save the jukebox musical 'Rock of Ages' from being a major disappointment at the nation's box offices this past Father's Day weekend.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - An Eighties jukebox musical, "Rock of Ages" did especially paltry business art a mere $15.1 million dollars at third place. "That's My Boy" only grossed $13 million to come in No. 5 after being bested by holdover "Snow White and the Huntsman" which made $13.8 million.

Overall, it was a soft weekend for the movies: "Madagascar 3," fell less than 42 percent from its opening weekend and has earned $120.5 million in its first 10 days of play domestically. The animated feature has racked up a resounding $277.5 million worldwide.

The "Alien" pre-quel "Prometheus," fell 60 percent, has now earned $88.9 million domestically.

"Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy" are major disappointments for their studios and stars, particularly Adam Sandler.

"Rock of Ages," came in far behind 2007 "Hairspray" and Universal's 2008 "Mamma Mia!" Both of those movies -- likewise based on hit Broadway plays -- opened just north of $25 million.

"Rock of Ages" failed to capture younger moviegoers, despite leads Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta. Nearly 75 percent of the audience was over the age of 25, the demo that most relates to the film's music.

"The numbers aren't great. It's hard to fathom since the movie plays so well," Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said. "I'm still optimistic we can over perform during the week because of women."

Both "Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy" were relatively "low budget" by today's Hollywood standards. Both cost just under $70 million to produce.

"That's My Boy" marked Sandler's lowest debut for a comedy since "Spanglish" in 2004 at $8.8 million. Pairing Sandler with Andy Samberg, "That's My Boy" is the actor's first R-rated comedy since "Funny People," which opened to $22.7 million in July 2007.

"Sure we had hoped for more. It is a crazy, off-the-wall raunchy R-rated comedy that audiences laugh like crazy at. Kudos to Adam for mixing it up," Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer said. "We love being in the Adam Sandler business."

The Top Ten at the nation's box offices this past Father's Day weekend were:

1. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" - $35,500,000
2. "Prometheus" - $20,200,000
3. "Rock of Ages" - $15,060,000
4. "Snow White and the Huntsman" - $13,805,000
5. "That's My Boy" - $13,000,000
6. "Men in Black III" - $10,000,000
7. "The Avengers" - $8,848,000
8. "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" - $2,200,000
9. "Moonrise Kingdom" - $2,181,000
10. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" - $1,330,000
