LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Originally hailing from Erie, Pennsylvania Burns played teenager Sally Hardesty in director Tobe Hooper's film.

Filmed in east Texas during the height of the summer, amid rotting props from the local butcher shop, performing in the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." "Afterwards, I was just so grateful it was over," she revealed in a 2004 interview. "I probably was the happiest girl alive.

"I ran through dark woods chased by someone holding a live chainsaw!" she continued. "Where was my head?

"After many long hours out of the refrigerator, each had its own distinct odor," she explained of the cow, dog, cat and deer carcasses. When a dinner break was called in the early morning, she said, "Not many made it. We were down the road violently ill."

Burns added that she did not fare much better in the final days of filming. She was variously drenched in Karo syrup, glycerin, red paint, vegetable coloring and Hershey's chocolate syrup.

"I was avoided by cast and crew but very popular with bees, wasps and flies," she said.

"Sure it was tough, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I wouldn't have traded the experience for love or money."

Likened to a young Chloris Leachman, Burns would play Linda Kasabian in the TV adaptation of the Manson family epic "Helter Skelter." She would work with director Hooper again in "Eaten Alive" in 1977 - and generally stopped acting thereafter.

Burns would make cameos in other iterations of the Massacre franchise. She was an unnamed "patient on gurney" in 1994's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation," a film notable for providing early roles to future Oscar winners Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey.

Burns also popped up in 2013's "Texas Chainsaw 3D," both as a character called Verna and in footage from Hooper's original.
