I have just started studying at one of Britain's top universities, so from now on I may be writing about my experiences here.
I was sitting in an auditorium recently listening to welfare talks: who to go to if you are harassed; what to do if you are depressed etc. When there was something that struck me as quite bizarre.
A person came on to the stage and started talking of contraception. Being a Catholic in a country like this I have grown to not be surprised by most contraceptive talks; however, I was taken aback. I would like to give you all a transcript of what was said but I feel that it may be rather coarse. We were lectured on how to use these things for homosexual sex, and also that there were "accessories" available for those that wanted them.
This was when I realised that the young of this country are in some sort of condomania, the Government, educational institutions, and healthcare professionals are all throwing (sometimes literally) contraceptives to the young in some sort of blind hope to promote "safe sex".
Has nobody realised that by constantly relegating sex to something that is okay for anyone (in complete contradiction to the Law) they are negating their responsibility to provide the society with a good moral background. Sex has become something that it is fine, you see it in nearly everything, sexual imagery is used to sell products (some of which are explicitly non-sexual) the youth of this country, and many others, are being seduced towards immorality.
I suppose that it is easy to blame society's problems on a few key things, but I think that the attitude towards sex is actually the cause for many problems. Human beings have urges, we all know that, and by saying sex is fine we are saying to the young "It is okay to give in to temptation". Temptation has in fact become a word full of sexual imagery, and a word which no longer carries with it the caveat that it should be avoided.
The young are beginning to take the initiative and not only are they indulging their sexual fantasies but they are indulging their physical and mental urges, with no restraint. There is sometimes no respect, no respect for the person or anyone else. They do not respect their bodies they see them as a means to an orgasmic end, and people are becoming something to be used: who can see where this is going.
I may be blowing things out of all proportion, but I see all around me women (and men) who see themselves as sexual objects, and then wonder why they are used. The fact is that without a core morality, social and personal, all sorts of things start to break down. But within this quagmire of moral uncertainty may Christ remain our shining light, and the Church the world's witness to him.
