Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you. Help Now >
Reflecting Pool...Light Weaponry...Three Score Years Ago, Thee Days from Now

Op/Ed
As we begin to see cryptic press releases about our military's use of light weaponry, a.k.a. "the Force," in Babylon ('cuse me, I mean Iraq) we must all pray, fast and hope for deliverance. Why? Well, you decide.
Graduating from West Point in 1981, I served on active duty til the end of the First Gulf War. My last troop assignment was with the 7th Infantry Division (Light)---Our Symbol...The Hourglass; Our Mascot...the Black Widow; Our Motto---'Light, Silent and Deadly.'
My occupational secondary in operations research systems analysis during Desert Shield and Desert Storm allowed me to review some of the developments of "new black-box weaponry." Back then I was intrigued and awed---now, seven years after my reversion, I lament and I plead, Lord please stop the insanity!
This blurring of the line between sci-fi and real military science is not a recent phenomenon. One might be tempted to find its genesis in modern rocketry, but my guess is that it is a curse that has befallen our human nature since the Garden of Eden, and Cain and Abel.
Cain's jealousy spurred him to vividly imagine the first fratricide. He had firepower advantage over his meek and humble of heart shepherd brother. He knew how to pierce the earth quickly and deeply and how to wield the sharp blade of the sickle. It was a quick victory of might over right.
I pray we Americans are able to take three giant steps back in time to see more clearly what is currently out of focus.
Sixty years ago, this coming Saturday, Gadget didn't even make the headlines. On that July 16th, Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, he exploded at the top of a 100 ft tower and "proved" God's existence by demonstrating the unbridled power that Our Creator has placed at man's disposal. When the psalmist wrote, "you have made them little less than a god" he seemed right on the mark. It was supposed to be a Fourth of July demonstration, but God in His Providence God showed that he had a different timetable .
Moses and Elijah, and Our Lady and Jesus surely wept. In that forsaken desert, the Jornado del Muerte (Road to Death) of New Mexico, human existence changed forever. At dawn that fateful morning Gadget, the first creation of the Trinity Project, mushroomed heavenward as it left an indelible mark in space and time. Little Boy and Fat Man proceeded in short order...V-J Day too...might made right...and the rest as they say is history.
We postmoderns are apt to respond, "So what?" What's the big deal? or more likely, "What-ever!"
... Trinity, is just a name...The date is merely a coincidence, OK synchronicity if you like...Mary cannot be involved, she's just a woman and she died...And God keeps out of human affairs, after all evolution has proven that he is "hands-off" at best ...The miracle at the Jesuit mission in Hiroshima is just luck...and St. Maximillian Kolbe's monastery in Nagasaki was situated just out of harm's way to take advantage of the better view...The crater 300 meters diameter and 3 meters deep---come on, that smacks of numerology, and by the way I have different numbers and why do you go metric?...waves of destructive blast energy and particles of deadly gamma radiation, it's too technical for me, go away, you're dreamin'...
I may be...
However, THE EVIDENCE IS DEEP and I remain convinced that Jesus' Real Presence in the gift of the Holy Eucharist is inversely related to the bomb and that energy in general is linked to Divine Mercy in a most profound and mysterious way...Mass creative grace vs. mass destructive force...
If you are intrigued, please read the paper I wrote this past December, I welcome your feedback...(www.soltlaity.org/breadoflife.htm)
May the grace of unity, truth, goodness and beauty, who happens to be a person, Our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!
St. Faustina, Apostle of Divine Mercy, pray for us!
