We ask you, urgently: don't scroll past this

Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

A Political Dilemma - From Across the Pond

By Darren Collins
Op/Ed

I am an 18 year old student in the UK and am quite disgusted at the prospect of the forthcoming elections.

The election has not yet been called, but most people are sure that it will be called for May 5th. My problem is that I do want to be actively, and conscientiously engaged with politics because I believe that it is the only way things can be done in a democratic society. On May 5th I will be able to vote for the first time in my life, an occasion that should fill me with joy at being able to function in a democratic system, instead fills me with dread at whether I can vote for a party of death.

The situation in the UK with regard to abortion is crucially different from the US, there is no main party that are calling for even a re-evaluation of abortion law, or any pro-life issue. I am faced with choosing, if I opt for the main-stream parties, between a party that have just legalised euthanasia through starvation (Tony Blair's New Labour), and a party that are calling for more embryo and cloning research (Michael Howard's Conservative Party).

The politician's of this country do not consider pro-life people in the making of their policies because the Christians of this country have not been vociferous enough in their campaigns, the few campaigns there have been. The only chance that I have in a representation of my views is voting for the Pro-Life Party. However, that may not be so easy, because it is very unlikely that they will field a candidate in my area.

The problem: either I vote for a party whose views on life so disgust me that the idea of supporting them repulses me, or, I don't vote. The latter option equally disgusts me, how can a person in a democracy not engage with the most important act, how? My only option would be to spoil my ballot paper, register my disgust my scrawling on my ballot.

Democracy may be the best system that we have, I just wish the British politicians would realise that some people won't lie down whilst innocent children are slaughtered. Some people, alas not everyone.
