Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you. Help Now >
Cry abortion, and let slip the dogs of war

Op/Ed
These two words never appeared in my earlier piece - John and Kerry.
I am concerned by emails I did receive from people who would lecture me on abortion. You have missed the entire point. Yes, abortion is evil. Stop preaching to the choir. I do not know of anyone who is pro-abortion. There are those in America however, who grapple with the real concern about allowing their faith to be pushed upon someone else's life choices. You will not change their minds by yelling at them.
We cannot dictate our votes from the pulpit. My point in the earlier article is that if you begin to call a vote for one candidate a sin, you can probably find reasons on record to call it a sin to vote for the other. I am not even mentioning names here, or whether it be Presidential, Senate, Governor, or PTA elections. Fill in your own candidate. Where does it end? And how many of us will be left standing in communion line after the election line?
Yes, saving the trees is important to the man who wrote that it was not. I find it ironic that someone who is pro-life does not care for living trees. However, issues like the environment are so much more. I would know, I worked in a federal environmental office for three years and watched as the administration sought exemptions to the Clean Air Act and Threatened and Endangered Species Act. And yet the only concern I see from posters on this website is abortion. What air is your child going to breathe, what contaminates will be in his/her drinking water (perhaps you should read up on perchlorate before you take a sip), what of God's creatures will still exist for him/her to look on in wonder?
Yes, abortion is wrong. Yes, we should do all we can to stop it. But what service are we doing to our Church by screaming at each other online and on TV on this one issue as I've seen so many times? There is more to this election than any one issue and all you're becoming is fodder for Crossfire.
And then finally I ask you why if George Bush is the right man, have the number of abortions actually risen during his administration? Indeed, why not vote for Hitler. Yes, Charmaine, there really is a Catholic Claire Henline.
