Catholic League on The Tragedy of Anne Rice
This is more than an odyssey-it's a tragedy
Rice came back to the Catholic Church in the 1990s, but only the day before yesterday did she learn that the bishops are not fond of guys marrying. She said in 2008 that Catholicism is not anti-gay, but in 2010 it was so anti-gay she had to quit. She is pro-life, knows abortion kills, but sides with the agenda of Planned Parenthood. She wants Christ without the Christianity. This is more than an odyssey-it's a tragedy.
'Anne Rice started as a believing Catholic; then she quit the Church; then she rejoined the Church; now she has quit again. All of this is as amusing as it is sad, and would be of no interest to the Catholic League save for her parting shots at the Catholic Church'.
NEW YORK, NY (Catholic League) - Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on writer Anne Rice's decision to quit Christianity while still professing a belief in Christ:
"Anne Rice started as a believing Catholic; then she quit the Church; then she rejoined the Church; now she has quit again. All of this is as amusing as it is sad, and would be of no interest to the Catholic League save for her parting shots at the Catholic Church.
Rice said this week that when the American bishops opposed homosexual marriage, that was the "last straw." She offered, "I didn't anticipate in the beginning that U.S. Catholic Bishops were going to come out against same-sex marriage." Did she think they would be silent on one of the most contentious moral issues of our day? Or that they were silently cheering for gay marriage all along? Either way, her virginal views are startling.
Here's another beauty. She said this week that "I refuse to be anti-gay," thereby separating herself from all those awful Catholic bigots. But when she was asked two years ago on ABC-TV whether the Catholic Church condemns her gay son to hell, she said, "I don't think anybody in my church would say that. I think our view is far more compassionate." She got that right. But does she have any idea how she looks now?
Last night, Rice told Joy Behar "I myself am anti-abortion." It didn't take long before the pro-abortion and anti-Catholic Behar snapped, "You would deny other women the choice to have an abortion?" To which Rice said, "I would not deny them the choice." Yet in the same breath she added, "I do think it's the taking of a human life."

Apparently Ms. Rice does not understand the difference between man's laws and God's laws. Marriage was the first covenant God made with Adam and Eve. The first covenant of six in His salvation Plan. The last was with Jesus as the Royal High Priest with the Catholic Church in the form of the Eucharist. Sorry! Ann the Church does not have the authority to change God's covenant. Mother Church is the defender of the faith. Ms. Rice, I suggest you read the Catechism of the Catholic Church starting with "THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY" 1601. How can such a learned woman write two beautiful books "Christ the Lord Out of Egypt" and "Christ the Lord The Road to Cana", yet not know basic catechisms. Marriage is a sacrament, a civil union is man's law. Do not confuse the two. The Church is not sitting in judgment just defending our sacraments as handed down by God.
Anne Rice is a person in desperate need of understanding what it means to be a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Her most recent statements show an alarming degree of both mis-information and mis-understanding about the faith. If I could I would like to ask her if she believes and accepts the idea that GOD is DIVINE? If she accepts that idea then the next question I would ask is "How can it be that GOD as the DIVINE creator could or would make a mistake about anyone's sexual gender?". Because if she understood that GOD is in fact the DIVINE creator of all there is, it would naturally follow that GOD by definition CANNOT make mistakes. So given this argument if there is a MISTAKE, it is a MISTAKE made by the individual or HUMAN society and not by GOD who as was stated eariler is incapable of making mistakes of any sort by virtue of DIVINE nature. Finally I am reminded of a statement made by Socrates "The unexamined life is not worth living", Anne Rice in fact all of us should take heed of that advice, and exam if what we are saying and what we are doing match each other. May God Bless Anne Rice!
Thank you Lord for the real Catholic who read this web site and can compassionately understand other Catholics who are struggling with issues of faith and morals. Jesus didn't call "righteous but sinners". As a matter of fact, compare what the Catholic League is doing to what the Scribes and Pharisees did in the Gospel. I agree with a writer above, some have forsaken the Gospel in their discourse for politics. These diatribes by the League can actually drive the "weak" away from the Church. May the Holy Spirit enlighten and strengthen Anne Rice in her search for Jesus, "the Truth".
Thanks Bill Donohue for defending the church as usual. By the way if Im not mistaken Anne Rice has a homosexual son. Anyway before she leaves she should be checking out the pastoral programs already in the Catholic Church.
She may realize the church is more enlightened on the evil taking place in the world than she realizes. Yes, let us pray for her. I for one am glad we do have a champion in the Catholic League.
If same sex marriage goes through we may not be able to practice our faith according to church teaching. Religious Freedom is at stake all of the time at all times in season and out of season.
I agree totally with NADINE. After all, we as the church get our FAITH shaken by events that go against our beliefs, or by ill actions that many of our own religious leaders committ.
But the point here is that we must mold, correct, and fortify the church through our faith and speaking out when we see unjustices. It is easy to leave the church, but if we believe our church is Jesus Christ's Church, then we must continue remain faithful to Her. GOD will take care of those corrupt religious leaders in their due time, in the meantime we must remain faithful to Her, but always speaking out the injustices when they go against GOD's WORD.
I dont really know Ms. Rice, but we should not make a big issue about her. There are many other catholics whose faith is being troubled, so we must pray more fervently to restore their Faith, including Ms. Rice's.
Dear God Father, we ask through your Son Jesus Christ, to open our hearts to your Word and Love that we remain faithful to you in any moment of our lives, no matter how tempting we feel to leave you, Amen.
Ms Rice chose to go public with her disatisfaction with the Catholic Church on same sex marriage and the Catholic League chose to respond. I see nothing wrong with the response. If she did not want to evoke a public response she should have kept her decision between her and her parish priest or bishop.
I think the big question is: Whom do you wish to have the final say? If Anne has sinned against the Lord she has every right to ask for forgiveness. If she doesn't need the fellowship of her brothers & sisters in Christ then, at least, allow her to live in the castle she has built outside the teachings of the Catholic Church. Christ established His church, through Peter, one of the most human & fallible apostles. He even said: 'Get behind me, Satan.' because, i think, as a layman, the corruption and power of Satan, over the human flesh, is a strenuous device, one we must all be vigilant of. As a writer, I pray that Anne will reject Satan and partake fully of the Light & Peace that may only be celebrated in Jesus Christ and the Church He established on Earth.
Good article. Anne Rice is a tragic figure who is a good representation of who and what a lapsed Catholic is. If she knew more about her own religion and the gospel, she would have a different opinion. I have become a stronger Catholic by learning more about what we believe and why we believe. After reading the entire New Testament, I came away with a different view of God and Christ. In a nut shell, Christ says DO NOT VICTIMIZE ANYONE, DO NOT VICTIMIZE YOURSELF, ALWAYS HAVE A HELPING HAND TO LEND, AND WORSHIP GOD. Now who in the world would have any problem with that?? Except if you are an evil person who choses to do evil.
Hello! Nadine,
The Catholic league is not the Catholic Church.
The Church never condemn anyone to hell - not even Hilter - because it is between God and the person. So you should not worry, just keep learning and focusing on Christ and His Church. Note that the Church has the power to bind and loose authorized by Christ Himself.
I thank the Catholic League for correcting and fighting for the truth of Jesus's teaching if ANYBODY openly accuses the Church unjustly in anyway. The Church is praying for salvation for all people, including unbelivers, you and me, Ms. Rice, everyday of the year, during Mass - there should be around 400,000 Masses daily around the world. Is that enough?
Anyone who sincerely search for the truth will fine it.
God bless.
Ken
Sorry to hear of Anne's loss. While it is our duty to point out where she is in error, I think the sin would be in taking pleasure in being righteous or sanctimonious. In truth, we know better - "Much will be required of the person entrusted with much,
and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” How sad it remains for any person to learn of God, know of Christ, know His bride, and then turn away, elevating their personal 'wisdom' over all. Compare this to the sadness of remaining faithful despite the sympathy for a homosexual child.
