New Canon Law Editions Published to Deepen Understanding of Laws of the Catholic Church

Midwest Theological Forum(USA) and Wilson & Lafleur(Canada) published the English edition of the 6th Spanish language edition of the “Code of Canon Law Annotated” and the translation of the first Spanish language edition of the “Exegetical Commentary on the Code of Canon Law”, prepared under the responsibility of the Martin de Azpilcueta Institute, Faculty of Canon Law, originally published by the University of Navarre, Spain.

Chicago – June 24, 2004 – Midwest Theological Forum (MTF) and its publishing partner Wilson & Lafleur announced two bold new additions to their Gratianus Collection. The publishing companies jointly developed and introduced the second edition, revised and updated of the Code of Canon Law Annotated, a 2,100-page condensed commentary on Canon Law, and the Exegetical Commentary on the Code of Canon Law, an 8-book collection with more than 8,000-pages providing a thorough commentary on the entire Code and its original sources.

“These English translations were ambitious projects for us to undertake,” said Rev. James Socias, managing editor.

“We enlisted the support of more than 100 American canon lawyers and dozens of collaborators for both projects, spanning more than three years to complete. The result is a very rich resource not only for canon lawyers, but also for church tribunals, theologians, pastors and even laity interested in gaining more profound knowledge of Church law.

They can benefit from the many insights of the most highly-respected experts in canon law worldwide. Special thanks to Fr. Patrick Lagges, JCD, Vicar of the Offices of Canonical Services of the Archdiocese of Chicago, for his dedication as Review Coordinator for the Exegetical Commentary on the Code of Canon Law and to Fr. Michael Hack, JCD, former Judicial Vicar of the Archdiocese of Chicago, for his commitment as an assistant editor of the Code of Canon Law Annotated and his work in the Exegetical Commentary.”

Each volume has the Latin and English translation of the Code of Canon Law, along with thorough commentary on each canon. The editions offer broad access to Church Law in the following ways:

• Code of Canon Law Annotated (“Red Code”): a single 2,100-page edition that offers concise commentary on every canon in a single hard-bound book. The Red Code provides a portable, easy access to critical issues affecting marriage tribunals, pastoral leaders, moral theologians, students and many others. His Eminence Julian Cardinal Herranz, President of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts in the Roman Curia, comments: “I know of no other single resource that offers an up-to-date compilation of the complementary norms that have been promulgated by English language Episcopal Conferences.”

List price: US $95.00 each.

• Exegetical Commentary of the Code of Canon Law: an 8-book, 8,000-page volume that includes exhaustive commentary on every canon and its original sources. The volume provides a literal “encyclopedia” to Canon Law and is soon-to-be considered a key component in the collection of scholars, clergy and laity pursuing a more in-depth knowledge of the sources of Church law.

His Eminence Cardinal Herranz had this to say, “Indeed, it would seem to me that this publication, carefully translated, clearly presented, and handsomely bound, will be an indisputable resource for English-speaking canonists, pastors, and students of the law.”

List price: US $1,200.00 for the 8-book volume.

About the Gratianus Collection

“The Gratianus Collection is published to help people gain a clearer understanding of the complexities of Canon Law, especially in a world filled with confusion and misunderstandings,” said Ernest Caparros, senior editor of the collection. “These new editions will help people gain clarity more easily so they can act with confidence and conviction in their interpretation of Church law.”
