PIUS X - Leading Catholic School Nationwide in the Kohl's Cares Contest

LINCOLN, NE (August 24, 2010) - Pius X High School is currently one of the leading schools in a nationwide contest to win $500,000 from Kohl's Department Store. The online contest, "Kohl's Cares," began July 7 and runs through Sept 3, 2003. Participants are invited to vote for their schools via a "Kohl's Cares" link on Facebook. Anyone 13 or older can vote up to 5 times for their favored school.

If Pius succeeds in placing within the top 20 schools at the end of the contest, the $500,000 prize will be used toward the construction of a kitchen for the school's lunch program. The school currently does all of its food preparation in the adjacent Clark Jeary building which will in the future be torn down, leaving Pius X sorely in need of the kitchen.

In the past several weeks, a vast effort has been undertaken by school administrators, faculty, staff, students and school families to garner votes online for Pius, according to Michelle Birkel, Development Director at Pius X High School. Alumni and supporters have spread the word to friends and family not only through Facebook and other internet accounts like Twitter, but also by word of mouth. Local media outlets and businesses have also worked hard to spread the word about the contest. Through these efforts, the school has managed to reach the top 20, and is the only school in the state of Nebraska - either public or private - to be in the top 100.

As of this writing, Pius X High School was within striking distance of finishing in the top 20, due to the overwhelming support of the community. But competition remains fierce among the top vote-getters. In order for Pius to maintain its position through the end of the contest, the school needs even broader support from the Catholic community in our Diocese and state. "We are overwhelmed by the support that the broader community has shown our school as we strive to win this amazing contest," says Tom Korta, Principal of Pius X High School. "We still have plenty of work to be done before September 3rd, so we humbly ask our friends to continue to spread the word and keep gathering votes."

The voting is done through Facebook, the online social network. Persons who do not have a Facebook account may create one to vote and, if they choose, cancel the account after the contest is concluded. To vote, please refer to the directions below. Or go directly to our web page at www.piusx.net.

How you vote if you have facebook:

1. Go to the internet and logon to www.facebook.com/kohls
2. Click on: "VOTE NOW ---Find My School".
3. When prompted, click "Allow" to the Kohl's link.
4. On the drop-down menu, enter Pius X High School Lincoln (Lancaster) NE. Select our school, and then click "Cast a Vote." Click "Like" and then click on the x in the top right hand corner. Cast your vote 5 times. (your vote will go from 20 votes left to 15 votes left).
5. You will see a Facebook share link underneath where you cast your votes. Click on this and then in the box say "Vote for Pius X for a new kitchen". Then select "Publish" to share with your Facebook friends. You can also select Facebook invite to invite your friends to do the same.

6. If you have any difficulty, call Pius X at 488-1046 for help.

How you vote if you do not have facebook:

1. Go to www.facebook.com.
2. Fill out information and click on the green Sign Up button.
3. Type in security code and select the green Sign Up button.
4. Go to your email account to confirm your new Facebook account. Click on the first link to access Facebook.

5. Go to the internet and logon to www.facebook.com/kohls
6. Proceed with the "How you vote if you have Facebook" instructions.
