Revelation Center Stage at Biblical Conference

STEUBENVILLE, OH (August 3, 2010) - "Jeremiah received the word of God," said Archbishop José Gomez, coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. "He went out and did it. This is the most basic pattern for the life of a disciple."

The 2010 Applied Biblical Studies Conference, hosted by Dr. Scott Hahn, dedicated itself to "Unveiling the Mystery: The Book of Revelation" July 28-30 at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Participants arrived from Canada and Australia, Puerto Rico and Washington, pursuing a fuller comprehension of sacred Scripture.

During his homily at Mass for the conference, Archbishop Gomez explained how Scripture is to be received.

"St. Paul said faith comes by hearing, and hearing comes from the Word of God," said Gomez, former ordinary for the Archdiocese of San Antonio. But "we have to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. We are to not only ask what he can do for us, but also what we can do for him."

Throughout the week, participants were guided through a deeply liturgical and nuptial approach to the last book of the Bible, discovering "the marriage supper of the Lamb" (Rev. 19:9) to be the lens that makes clear the apparently mysterious Book of Revelation.

"When you look at the title 'Apocalypse,' it serves as a key for the rest of the book," said Dr. Hahn, author of The Lamb's Supper. "In the time of the apostles, an apokalypsis (unveiling) usually occurred at the end of a long, seven-day ceremony--a wedding. The unveiling of the bride is the privilege of the bridegroom. This was the consummation of the covenant on the seventh day."

"The Bible is one long book of romance," said Franciscan University theology professor Dr. John Bergsma. "God has betrothed himself to mankind...the climax of the wedding is the arrival of the Bride."

Other speakers included Kimberly Hahn, author of Beloved and Blessed; Dr. Brant Pitre, author of Jesus, the Tribulation, and the End of the Exile; Dr. Ted Sri, author of Queen Mother: A Biblical Theology of Mary's Queenship; Jeff Cavins, creator of the Great Adventure Catholic Bible Study; and Dr. Michael Barber, author of Coming Soon: Unlocking the Book of Revelation and Applying Its Lessons Today.

Throughout the conference, participants had regular opportunities for confession, daily Mass, praise and worship, and eucharistic adoration.

Some came early to undergo training in presenting the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology Journey Through Scripture Bible study, which uses Dr. Scott Hahn's covenantal perspective to help readers find the unity of God's word amongst the diversity of books of the Bible.

"This conference is too awesome to put into words," said Connie Miley of Holy Rosary Parish in St. Mary's, Ohio. "I could kick myself for not having found out about this about a hundred years ago. The wealth of information has just been phenomenal."
