K4J Releases New Vacation Bible School Program

Atlanta, GA (February 1, 2010) - Holding a vacation bible school (VBS) at your Catholic school or parish this summer? Want a program that is solidly "Catholic?" K4J has just released its newest VBS for 2010, "Circus of the Stars: Spotlight on the Father."

"Our program helps children learn their Catholic faith in all its richness," said Kathleen Conklin, national director of K4J, which stands for Kids for Jesus. "It is definitely not a 'cut-and-paste' program that has been adapted for Catholics.

"As the Year of the Priest declared by Pope Benedict XVI draws to a close this June, our 2010 K4J VBS continues to foster love and gratitude for the gift of the Catholic priesthood with a specific service activity to support diocesan priests."

"Spotlight on the Father" VBS includes a missionary project in which students collect their "spare" change to help the retirement fund for priests and religious in their particular diocese.

K4J is a program of Mission Network, sponsored by Regnum Christi. K4J programs are dedicated to developing Catholic virtues in children, and the new VBS is no different. Daily lessons focus on forming a child's virtues at home, at school and among friends. Children learn practical ways to live out their faith through the examples of the virtuous lives of the saints. The lessons are reinforced by materials and resolutions students take home at the end of each day.

The program also engages children's creativity through the use of music and crafts, and fosters teamwork among students. Schools and parishes have the option of adding the component for 5th through 8th grade students, where these students act as "captain" role models and leaders for the younger students. This peer-to-peer component is especially effective in reinforcing the daily lessons.

K4J's programs are user-friendly for the organizers and volunteers, with guidebooks that outline the daily activities, ready-made graphics to help with promotion, and much more. Sheet music for the VBS music CD is available for use by the school or parish music program. Other optional components include the "Holy Hero" saint trading cards that students can take home to remind them of the VBS lesson.

"I don't know why a Catholic school would use any other VBS," said Jennifer Kastroll, Director of the K4J VBS program in Ligonier, PA. "It is so authentically Catholic. At first I was hesitant thinking that the kids wouldn't like it because it is exactly what the adults want the kids to learn. And was I ever wrong. The kids love it, it is so fun! K4J has made the Catholic faith come alive in a fun and imaginative way that is understandable to the kids!"

"The K4J program gets (the students) excited about their Catholic faith," said Fr. James A. Wehner, STD, pastor of St. Thomas More parish in Pittsburgh, PA, which also uses the K4J programs. "It personally involves those young people in the story of Christ, in the story of the Church. The Gospel becomes alive for them. They are getting excited about coming to Mass."

Conklin said the characteristics mentioned by Father James are true of all the K4J programs. "The Circus of Stars is no different. Kids become excited about their faith and want to become active participants in the Church. K4J has become expert at motivating kids to live virtue and love their faith. It is so refreshing to see our middle-school-aged kids serve as captains in the Vacation Bible School and share their faith with the K4J kids. These young people are a powerful example of God actively working in the Church. As Pope Benedict says, 'The Church is alive and the Church is young.'"
