FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MEDIA ADVISORY

STEUBENVILLE, OH (January 19, 2010) -- The Institute of Bioethics at Franciscan University of Steubenville will host "Ethical Issues in Suffering and Death," a conference for healthcare professionals, March 26-28, 2010.

"Death and suffering are the two topics that most often confront health care professionals and ethics committees in hospitals," says Dr. Patrick Lee, director of the Institute of Bioethics. "When do we withdraw life-sustaining treatment? Why does our society view suffering as the problem to be treated, rather than the mere symptom of a deeper problem?"

Six well-known experts will address a wide range of medical ethics issues:

Dr. Germain Grisez, professor emeritus of philosophy and moral theology at Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, will give the Friday evening Henkels Lecture, "What Suffering Is and Why God Allows Evil." Grisez is known as the creator of the "new natural law" theory. His books include the three-volume Way of the Lord Jesus, an encyclopedic treatment of Christian morality.

Dr. Theresa Collett, professor of law at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, will speak on "The Value of Life and State Action." Collett has testified before committees of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, as well as before legislative committees in several states. She has served as special attorney general for the states of Oklahoma and Kansas, as well as assisting other state attorneys general in defending laws protecting human life and marriage.

Dr. John Haas will explain "Difficulties in End-of-Life Care Decisions." Haas is the president of the National Catholic Bioethics Center. He has testified before the Joint Judiciary Committee of the Massachusetts Legislature on physician-assisted suicide and before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health and Public Safety on the subject of human cloning.

Brother Daniel Sulmasy, OFM, MD, PhD, will speak on "Appropriate Responses to Different Types of Suffering at the End of Life." Sulmasy is a Franciscan friar, medical doctor, and noted bioethicist. He is editor in chief of the prestigious Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics, holder of the Sisters of Charity Chair of Ethics at St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan, and professor of medicine and director of the Bioethics Institute of New York Medical College.

Dr. Rita Marker will give an overview of "Current End-of-Life Ethical Issues and Dilemmas." Marker is the executive director of the International Task Force on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide. She is the author of the critically acclaimed book, Deadly Compassion.

Dr. Andrew Trew's plenary talk on "Suffering, Death, and the Doctor-Patient Relationship" stems from his work as a member of the Internal Review Board at the Cleveland Clinic. Trew also teaches bioethics at John Carroll University and St. Mary Seminary for the Diocese of Cleveland and recently participated in Pontifical Council for Life meetings at the Vatican.

Ethical Issues in Suffering and Death will be the fifth conference sponsored by the Institute of Bioethics since its founding in 2007. The institute seeks to engage the modern culture and present the truth of the human person, following the call of Pope John Paul II in Evangelium Vitae for universities to provide the research, discussion, and articulation of arguments that stand up for and spread the culture of life.

"What's at stake in the current cultural debates about abortion and euthanasia," Lee says, "is whether we as a society are going to recognize the equal and inherent dignity of all human beings or not."

Continuing medical education credits will be available for doctors, nurses, and some other healthcare professionals through agreements with Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association.

Registration fee is $350, early bird registration by February 26 is $310 (half-price for members of Allegheny General or West Penn Hospital health systems). Meals are $85.

For more information or to register for the conference, call 1-800-437-8368 or visit www.franciscanconferences.com.
