Food For The Poor's Annual Boca Raton Gala New Hope New Beginnings to Build Much Needed Housing
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COCONUT CREEK, FL (December 18, 2009) - South Florida residents will gather at the Boca West Country Club, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, to help Food For The Poor, the largest international relief organization in the nation, build much needed housing for the destitute in the Caribbean and Latin America. The 15th annual gala, New Hope New Beginnings, will feature an elegant cocktail reception and an exclusive silent auction, followed by a gourmet dinner, and dancing.
Master of ceremonies for New Hope New Beginnings will be Emmy Award-winning newscaster Calvin Hughes. Hughes serves as the weekday morning and noon news anchor at WPLG-TV Local 10 (ABC) News. Hughes has traveled to Haiti with Food For The Poor and witnessed the plight of the poor.
The gala focuses on the dire housing needs of the poor. Without an education and a job, they cannot afford a home. Without food the family goes hungry, and the weak become ill. Housing is a top priority for Food For The Poor, with more than 55,000 housing units given to the poor. By providing simple, sturdy homes, the nonprofit can change the lives of entire families by giving them the security of a safe, dry place to live.
"Through the years we have found many Food For The Poor home recipients are able to find jobs shortly after they receive the gift of a home," said Angel Aloma, Food For The Poor's Executive Director.
The event chairs for New Hope New Beginnings are Robin and Gail Mahfood. Robin has been involved with Food For The Poor since its founding in 1982, and currently serves as its president and chief executive officer. Under his management, Florida's largest charity has doubled in size every three years, and has maintained a remarkable operating cost ratio - under 4 percent.
"Together we can make a difference in the lives of those who struggle daily to survive," said Robin Mahfood. "Poor living conditions and a lack of safe shelter, leave families in the countries we serve extremely vulnerable to disease and storms."
Food For The Poor will honor South Florida residents whose generosity and dedication to the organization have been inspirational. Food For The Poor's 2009 Ambassadors for the Poor honorees include Coleman and Anna Gorham, Ron and Mary Jasco, David and Eileen Price, and Lynn University's President Dr. Kevin Ross.
Event sponsors include American Nicaraguan Foundation, Dennis Charley & Associates, Inc., DKB Trade Concepts, Dusco Doors, McFFE Group, National Cancer Coalition, Quadriga Art, Inc., Seaboard Marine, and TD Bank, N.A.
