Thomas More College Announces Essay Contest

Merrimack, New Hampshire (November 4, 2009) -- The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts announced today the prizes and rules for its 2010 Faith & Reason Essay Contest. The contest is available to high school seniors, homeschool students, and to all young people eligible for Freshmen admission to Thomas More College in the Fall of 2010.

The Faith & Reason Essay Contest will distribute a combined $100,000 to qualified students. Awards will include one first place prize of $30,000, two second place prizes of $20,000 each, and three third place prizes of $10,000 each. Prizes will be distributed over four years, and cannot be continued beyond that time. To maintain eligibility, winners must continue with a full course load of at least 12 credits per semester and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Applicants are invited to reflect upon the Introduction to Pope Benedict XVI's social encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, and submit an essay of 2 to 3 pages in answer to the question: How does the exercise of charity in our day call for the courageous witness to truth?

"In his encyclical Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI reflected upon the vital importance of keeping charity and truth bound together in the life of every Christian," said Thomas More College Director of Admissions Mark Schwerdt. "As an institution dedicated to the Catholic Faith and to the transmission of the Western intellectual tradition, Thomas More College is especially dedicated to the pursuit of truth within the bonds of charity."

"We want to honor the rising generation of scholars who are prepared to be courageous witnesses to truth, as our Holy Father stated," added Thomas More College President Dr. William Fahey. "This scholarship fund allows us to recognize those applicants who demonstrate a superior intellectual ability while adding to our generous financial aid package."

Essays must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2010, or received via e-mail no later than midnight of the same day. Essays must include a cover sheet listing the applicant's name, address, telephone number, e-mail, high school graduation date, and age. Completed essays should be sent to Mark Schwerdt at 6 Manchester Street, Merrimack, New Hampshire 03054, or via e-mail at mschwerdt@ThomasMoreCollege.edu. Prizes will be awarded only to those students who have completed an Application for Admission to Thomas More College.
