National Relic Tour to End at Los Angeles Cathedral

After a successful tour of 21 dioceses, and a final stop in New York that drew thousands to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Los Angeles's most famous religious relic returned to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels at a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Roger Mahony on December 9.

Well over 100,000 people nationwide have already come to venerate this small relic since the tour began in May, and as many as 23,000 have stood in lines for hours at a single location to catch a glimpse of the revered piece of cloth.

"The response has been overwhelming: this tour has touched the souls of countless numbers of the faithful," said Andrew Walther the National Tour Coordinator and AHR Vice President. "Many people have come back to the Catholic Church - some after years of absence - wherever this relic has visited. It has been an incredibly powerful force."

The tour was organized by the Apostolate for Holy Relics (AHR) - a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles. It was cosponsored by the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council in New Haven, Conn. and Family Rosary in Easton, Mass..

The relic - likely the only one in the United States - is a small piece that was detached from the tilma or cloak of Juan Diego and given to Archbishop John Cantwell of Los Angeles by the Archbishop of Mexico City, Luis Maria Martinez in 1941. It has been in the archives of the LA Archdiocese under the care of Msgr. Francis Weber since 1981.

"We are grateful to Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles for allowing us to organize this tour, and to the Bishops of America for inviting us to share this historic event with their people," said Thomas Serafin, AHR President.

The faithful believe that the image on the tilma, or cloak, of a poor Indian named Juan Diego was miraculously created by the Virgin Mary in 1531. The image - which continues to baffle scientists - is now the most recognizable religious symbol in Latin America, and devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is a favorite of Catholics throughout the Americas.

Juan Diego was canonized July 31, 2002 in front of an enormous crowd of over 5 million. Up to 20 million people visit the Mexico City shrine annually, making it the most visited in the world. Tens of thousands are expected to pay their respects at the Los Angeles Cathedral over the next several days.
