Catholic Theological Union Appoints New Academic Dean

Chicago, IL (JULY 2, 2009) - The Board of Trustees of Catholic Theological Union (CTU) has selected Barbara Reid, O.P., as the new Vice President and Academic Dean.

Reid is a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids, Michigan and is professor of New Testament Studies at CTU. She has been a member of the CTU faculty since 1988. Reid received her doctorate in biblical studies from the Catholic University of America and has published widely, earning a national reputation as a leading New Testament scholar. She currently writes the weekly column on "the Word" for America magazine.

Reid, who is fluent in Spanish, has a deep interest in the Latino/a heritage. Finding inspiration in the Latino/a experience, she most recently authored, Taking Up the Cross: New Testament Interpretations Through Latina and Feminist Eyes (Fortress Press, 2007) and Las Parábolas: Predicándolas y Viviéndolas (Liturgical Press, 2008, 2009). Reid is currently writing Sophia's Table: An Introduction to Feminist Interpretation of the Scriptures (forthcoming from Eerdman's Press) and is general editor for a new 60-volume feminist commentary on the Bible (forthcoming from Liturgical Press).

"Having been a member of the faculty for 21 years, Barbara clearly has an intimate knowledge of CTU and its mission of preparing men and women to serve the people of God throughout the world. She brings to this critical role, the earned respect and esteem of her colleagues at CTU and around the country," said Rev. Donald Senior, C.P., president of CTU. "Barbara is a very gracious and collaborative person who, in the tradition of the Dominican Sisters, is dedicated to scholarship and service to the Church. We are so grateful to have someone of her quality and stature as our new Vice President and Academic Dean."

Reid succeeds Gary Reibe-Estrella, S.V.D., who served with distinction as Vice President and Academic Dean for thirteen years. "The Board of Trustees passed a resolution at our last meeting thanking Gary for his years of generous service to CTU. We are so thankful for his dedication and tireless work. We look forward to his return to his faculty position," said Rev. Michael Slattery, O.S.A., chairman of the CTU Board of Trustees.

Barbara Reid's term began July 1, 2009. The official installation will take place at the school's opening liturgy on Saturday, September 12.

Catholic Theological Union (CTU), located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, is the largest Roman Catholic school of theology and ministry in the United States. CTU educates 500 clergy, religious, and lay persons pursuing master and doctoral level degrees in various areas of theology and ministry. Nearly one third of its student body is international from more than 40 countries worldwide. In addition to its courses on Catholic theology, the school also has highly respected programs in Jewish studies and in Islamic studies--both intended to promote dialogue and mutual respect among the Abrahamic faiths. Barbara E. Reid, O.P. is a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She holds a Masters from Aquinas College in Religious Studies and a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She is the author of Taking Up the Cross: New Testament Interpretations Through Latina and Feminist Eyes (Fortress Press, 2007), The Gospel According to Matthew. New Collegeville Bible Commentary Series (Liturgical Press, 2005), Parables for Preachers (3 volumes; Liturgical Press, 1999, 2000, 2001), Las Parábolas: Predicándolas y Viviéndolas (Liturgical Press, 2008, 2009), Choosing the Better Part? Women in the Gospel of Luke (Liturgical Press, 1996), A Retreat With St. Luke (St. Anthony Messenger Press, 2000), and many journal articles. Currently she is writing Sophia's Table: An Introduction to Feminist Interpretation of the Scriptures (forthcoming from Eerdman's Press) and is General Editor for a new 60-volume feminist commentary on the Bible (forthcoming from Liturgical Press). She writes the weekly column on "the Word" for America magazine.
