Keep the Faith - Don't Fear the R Word! Economic turmoil is golden opportunity says author.

PHOENIX, AZ (December 3, 2008) -- Even though our economy is going to hell in a hand basket, Chris Benguhe, Catholic Sun Columnist and the author of the new book, "Overcoming Life's & Common Tragedies" says it just might be a blessing in disguise.

"Remember the old saying - is the glass half empty or half full?" says Benguhe. "Well, what about when the glass is completely empty? Then it's time to realize the value of the glass."

The recent announcement that we are officially in a recession conjures of all the worst images of economic apocalypse for many. But after the blaming and the explaining, underneath all the gloom, doom and depression, Benguhe believes there could be a silver lining or at least a silver lesson - one that might lead to a brighter and better America?

"The answer is faith - believing in something bigger and better than you," explains Benguhe. "If you have a grand purpose and you believe in what you are doing and why you are doing it, you can endure more than you ever imagined."

Bengue believes that over the last couple of prosperous decades in America, we have begun to spend our lives running away from struggle, wanting to be free of suffering, free of pain and hardship, before we allow ourselves to be happy. In fact, he says that many Americans now connect happiness inexorably to leisure, to opulence and wealth.

But our current crisis is a chance for all of us to change that perspective - to focus on something greater.

"What if we Americans believed we could find happiness within the experiences of ordeals themselves and how we deal with them regardless of our prosperity, our fortune, misfortune, or end results at all?" asks Benguhe.

Benguhe says Americans need to realize that the American dream is not necessarily having everything you dreamed of.

"Maybe our true value is in the way we live in America, the people and the principles we live for, our belief in the innate value of mankind," says Benguhe. "And in turn those are the reasons to endure the toughest times life can offer -- to keep going -- for all those principles and people that we love."
