Dr. James H. Toner Named Professor of Political Science at Holy Apostles College and Seminary

CROMWELL, CT (August 22, 2008)- Dr. James H. Toner, an internationally known ethicist, author, lecturer and teacher, has been named Professor of Political Science at Holy Apostles College and Seminary.

Dr. Toner is a professor emeritus of international relations and military ethics at the U.S. Air War College in Alabama. He also has taught at the University of Notre Dame, the U.S Air Force Academy, Auburn University, and Norwich University.

Professor Toner, a native of Monson, Mass., holds a bachelor's degree from St. Anselm College, a master's from The College of William and Mary, and his doctorate in government and international studies from Notre Dame. He was ordained a permanent deacon in 2004.

Professor Toner is the author of five books, including The American Military Ethic; The Sword and the Cross; Morals Under the Gun: The Cardinal Virtues, Military Ethics and American Society; True Faith and Allegiance: The Burden of Military Ethics; and Worthy of the Promises: Building Catholic Character. He is also co-author of Coaching Youth League Baseball with Tom Easton, and Louis Scheuermann.

Dr. Toner also has been instrumental in the teaching of military chaplains, has appeared several times on EWTN as a military ethics expert, and was a consultant to the ABC News program "Nightline."

He has authored scores of articles for general-interest publications and academic journals including Columbia, First Things, Our Sunday Visitor, The Catholic Answer, The Review of Politics, Military Review, Social Science, and Joint Forces Quarterly. He has been a commissioned book reviewer for some of the nation's leading publishers including Houghton Mifflin, Prentice-Hall, Simon & Schuster, and Little, Brown & Co.

Professor Toner and his wife Rebecca have three grown sons. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1964. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain before his discharge in 1974.
