Feeding the Poor in Latin America

HAMDEN, CT (JUNE 30, 2008) - As skyrocketing food prices rip through the developing world leaving hunger in their tracks, Catholic aid and missionary organizations scramble to save the poor from starvation.

"People in North America have seen food prices rise dramatically, but their pain is far less than the suffering of the poor in Latin America," said Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo, LC, who heads the Mexican Prelature of CancĂşn-Chetumal.

The bishop has received an intimate view of today's global food crisis as President of Catholic World Mission. As the cost of various foods in the United States climbed 5, 10 or 15% over the past year, food prices have risen a staggering 75% globally.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the situation as one of "widespread hunger, malnutrition and social unrest on an unprecedented scale." The UN World Food Program estimates that 100 million people worldwide are plunging into a new category of desperate poverty and hunger.

Foods crucial to the diets of people in Latin America have soared in price, and 52 million chronically hungry people there already face the immediate prospect of starvation. In what the World Food Program calls a "silent tsunami," the cost of rice has tripled and beans have doubled; corn is up 83%, wheat 70%.

"For Latin America's poorest, the rising prices make the difference between eating once a day, eating every other day, or not eating at all. Some are making patties out of mud and cooking oil in an effort to put something - anything - in their empty stomachs.

"In places where people must feed their children on one, two or three dollars a day, this is a matter of life and death. Little children, elderly people, and the sick - they're dying of malnutrition and the diseases that come with it!"

Catholic World Mission is helping with a Nutrition Program in Puebla and by shipping food to Honduras and the Philippines. CWM distributes food through all of its standing programs, including mission parishes, lay missionaries, and Catholic schools for the poor, medical outreach, and initiatives for homeless street children, and more.

Discussing the present crisis, Bishop Elizondo pointed to an address Pope Benedict XVI gave to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization:

"Hunger and malnutrition are, unfortunately, among the most serious scandals that still affect the life of the human family," said the Holy Father. "The millions of people whose very lives are threatened, because they are deprived of a minimum of the necessary nourishment, call for the attention of the international community, because we all have the duty to take care of our brothers."
