31 US Women To Attend Summit In Rome For Consecrated Virgins

LANSING, MI (MAY 9 2008) - Congress Summary: Nearly 500 consecrated virgins from 52 countries will gather May 14-17, 2008 in an international congress convoked by His Eminence Cardinal Franc Rodé, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. 31 of these women will be arriving from the United States. His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his desire to receive the virgins in private audience.

The purpose of the international summit is to foster the growing Order of Virgins in the Catholic Church. Meeting on the theme Consecrated Virginity Lived in the World: "A Gift in the Church and for the Church" (Cardinal Ratzinger), the congress will include theological and spiritual conferences, a round-table, discussion groups, testimonies, and country reports. Following the congress days, the consecrated virgins will enjoy three pilgrimage days in Rome.

Further Info on the Order of Virgins: Consecrated by her diocesan Bishop according to the liturgical Rite restored in 1970, the consecrated virgin is mystically espoused to Christ (Canon 604) and lives in the world, but is not of the world, bringing the presence of Christ as Spouse into her own particular circumstances and profession. Informal counts show approximately 3,000 consecrated virgins worldwide, including 1,000 or more in America, 1500 in Europe, and 500 in other continents. Pope John Paul II, in his post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Vita consecrata said that it is a "source of joy and hope to witness in our time a new flowering of the ancient Order of Virgins, known in Christian communities ever since apostolic times." Appointed by Cardinal Rodé, the international planning committee for the Congress-Pilgrimage consists of The Most Reverend Raymond L. Burke, serving as Bishop-liaison with the Congregation, consecrated virgins Yolande Salmon (France), Judith Stegman (USA), Gloria Irene Álvaro (Spain), Maria Luisa Oefele (Germany), and Elena Bolchi (Italy).
