Launch of Catholic Soccer Camps at Franciscan University

STEUBENVILLE, OH (APRIL 17, 2008) -- A Catholic-oriented soccer camp will take place this summer at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio. Catholic Soccer Camps (CSC) will run two weeks of camps, July 6 - 11 and July 13 - 18, for male and female campers between the ages of eight and seventeen.

CSC is the first soccer camp of its kind, combining high-level soccer instruction with top-notch Catholic ministry. It is operated in a collaborative relationship between the CSC, the World Youth Soccer Academy, The Soccer Academy television show, and Franciscan University of Steubenville.

The camps share Catholic values with campers through praise and worship, daily Mass, and opportunities for confession provided by the Franciscan friars. Camps attendees also receive an example of faith in action from the devout student-athletes who play soccer for Franciscan.

The soccer camp features top professional players and coaches from Italy, Brazil and the U.S. Massimo Carli, a current select coach in the Italian Serie D, will be on hand to train players. He will be joined by Ricardo Perrotta, a former Brazilian National Team player for Brazil's University Squad, Patrick Doering, the head coach of Franciscan University's Women's Varsity Team, and Antonio Soave, the head coach of Franciscan University's Men's Varsity Team and the on-camera host for The Soccer Academy television show.

Also joining the team of coaches will be Eddie Gavin of the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer (MLS) and Luke Vercollone of the Charleston Battery (USL) and the New England Revolution in the MLS. Both Gavin and Vercollone are devout Catholics and are featured speakers with Catholic Athletes for Christ.

Bob Rice, Franciscan University catechetics professor and nationally known Catholic musician, will head music ministry for the soccer camps. Playing alongside Rice will be Franciscan athletic director Chris Ledyard, an accomplished songwriter and performer.
